I am very wary of being one of those forum guys that changes brand and then knocks their old brand and thinks everything is perfect with their new choice. - the Merc GLE 350d is not the same sort of vehicle as the RRS, I.E. the Merc is more a road car for touring with some 4x4 characteristics. - I miss the memory seats, electric steering column, dual glove compartments, Centre console fridge for cans of coke and bottles of water when on a long drive. My wife prefers the RRS seats when driving as she has always found mercs seats too long for her size. - left home Wednesday morning with 67 miles on the clock and then drive 350 miles through France. I liked the following: - smooth drive with air suspension. 9 speed gearbox meant only 1500 RPM at 80 mph . Over the journey including being stuck in a traffic jam for an hour we averaged 28 mph. This will improve as engine loosens up. On the same journey fuel cost was 15 euros less no great difference but helps. I like the acceleration and very quiet. Tax 225 v 500 and instance 60 pa less on a greater value. When the back seats are down the rear base seat does not restrict front seats going fully back. Command system good including warnings if too close to car in front and indication of what the speed limit is. Not sure whether RRS or Merc navigation better. Overall loading space no difference in my opinion. RRS definitely has better wing mirrors. Do not like not having a spare wheel; supposedly if one has a tyre issue you press a button and Merc arrive with a new tyre in 45 minutes. Not sure how this would work if you were off road somewhere. When friends ask me why I change I can distil it down to one real reason - lack of confidence in LR. The cars are great when all working. I love the idea that my Merc is covered for breakdown for 30 years anywhere in Europe for me personally I was prepared to pay for this piece of mind. If it all went wrong would I return to the LR fold - most likely, but would hope a few things had changed for the better. I think that for the price of a new RRS, LR could follow Merc with lifetime breakdown cover and maybe a longer warranty to counter reliability perception. Anyway early days yet so will give more feedback at our next meet up. No doubt something special about a LR. Hope I have been objective? Current Merc GLE 3.5d 2016 model, 2011 RRS HSE standard Previous 2012 FL2 liked but boot too small Previous to LR's 3 x Merc E320 estates - fantastic load carriers and long distance cruisers, ultra reliable. Only changed as needed a 4x4 high tow vehicle. Did have a 1955 early LR drop down windscreen and fuel tank under the drivers seat; again very reliable and super rugged. |

Glad you're getting on well with the new purchase so far Nigel and look forward to seeing you in October for a run out and a good look around it. Will be interesting to see what your experiences are like after spending abit more time with the Merc.
