Dull headlight lens

My headlight lenses are a bit dull. Was thinking about trying to polish them up a bit but not sure the best way to go about it. Any Ideas ?

Wet & dry and soapy water, did mine finished up with 2000 grit. Think I started at 800.
Like new now.

The lenses are plastic with a lacquer coat.

If you t-cut them they will look great for a few months and then the plastic will start to get stained and cloud as it's no longer protected.

Do it properly at your local body shop. I had mine flattened and re-lacquered for £45.

Didn't know about the laquer, maybe get the pro's to sort it then.

I've heard toothpaste suggested before- I guess it's quite abrasive too though

Yes there are a couple of Lens cleaners out there .They work very well and the better ones have a final protective coating to apply when the job is done. 2006 4.2 S/C with Tow Pack, Side Steps, DRL's, 19" & 20" wheels, additional 110 ltr Fuel Tank Roof Rack and performance mods.

Funny, I was in Halfords just last lunch time picked up this

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-clean...dlight-kit

As previous posts suggest lens is plastic and just t-cutting or tooth paste is short term win (weeks), this kit has 2 bottles a cleaning solution (is it a mild cutting compound?) and a final coat spray ( is this just a clear laquer?)
£30 seemed a bit steep, but if it works well really tempted to try it, any one else tried this kit?

I have the Megs NXT polish and really impressed with the quality duration of the product, so as a quality brand tempted to give this one a go.

I tried the Meguiars 1 step, that's when I learned about the lacquer. The two step stuff should be better as I'm guessing the second step is a lacquer.

Just read the instructions on the rear of the PlastX Bottle and it says not to use on coated plastics, so if there is a lacquer coating on the lens I guess that would mean that as well.

So probably not advisable to use the PlastX cleaner.

Any headlight that's speckled/cloudy means the the top coat has/is coming off.
Any headlight restoring product will only make this worst as they are all abrasive.
Plastic headlight lenses are polycarbonate, which UV rays will deteriorate making them cloudy the top coat is essentially just a UV protector to delay this.

If you want to do it properly the best way is with a selection of wet and dry and then a UV protecting top coat. If done properly this will last for 5 years plus before needing doing again.
If done without a top coat they will need doing again in 12-24 months.

Polish it either with a machine or toothpaste, then apply a layer of wax over it. Wax the lights when you wash the car again... job's a good'en Smile

Cheers..
