Hi all.

I have an issue where by when I'm on the accelerator I have a vibration and can feel some kind of harsh grinding through my feet. Is worse in 3rd and 4th, in 4th at 50mph is more prominent.

This evening I was out with a few friends and I had a car load of people, on an incline it changed from 3rd to 4th and back again 2 or 3 times and the incline was only 300 yards long.

Any advice or known issue's?

i bought it from a dealer with warranty but wanted an idea before i get fobbed off. i am a mechanic myself but never like working on my own car.

Sounds like it might be the torque converter clutch. As it wears out it starts to judder - sometimes referred to as the "cattle grid" effect because it feels/sounds like driving over one. It's a known issue with gearbox and affects all marques that use the ZF 'box.

It can be fixed by replacing the torque converter (which includes the clutch). One diagnostic method is to add Dr Tranny to the gearbox oil. If it clears up the judder then it's likely the torque converter clutch. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I'd chuck it back at them to fix it udner warranty.
Somebody on the Disco3 forum has used a gearbox in Pompey with good feedback...

West 4x4 have took a quick look but they arent 100% on the cause, they got it to do it straight away and said transmission but cant say what part without more extensive diagnosis. i have called the dealer and they have told me they want it taken to their local garage 50 miles away so i have told them to get it recoverd if that is the case as im not risking driving it that far unless i have it in writing that they accept all responsibilty. i'm still waiting for their responce....

If you've only just bought it then what's the issue!?

It's covered under your consumer rights + warranty. In fact it could be a positively brilliant event to happen as a freshly reconditioned torque converter and a change of oil in the gearbox would set you back a pretty penny if paying for them yourself!

If the seller quibbles or tries to ask you for any money I would give them the motor back and find another one elsewhere, if they cant be trusted from the offset then how're they gonna be in 3 month's time when suddenly something goes and they tell you "it's a wear-and-tear part!"

As a side note, if you do walk away I would seriously consider the Supercharged, the MPG is lower yes, but I can get 24mpg when cruising in mine and around 16 in town. I doubt that your TDV6 will get a significantly higher amount, the petrol car costs less to buy and the engines are more reliable. The RRS-SC are all usually decked out with more toys as they had a higher base spec.

Oh and not to overlook the obvious ... but the BHP... 390HP, they go like stink.

So I rang the dealer and after he finished with his attitude he eventually said take it to the garage they use in Newbury so notes that where she is now.

On the way up the noise got worse and when I pulled away when moving in traffic it has a clonk. On an incline in 3rd doing 30 mpH it was even worse.

I will keep you all updated

I think the purchaser should return this vehicle to the reseller and ask for his money back in full, as under the sale of goods act, not a good start and you don't know what you have got with this vehicle, future problems out of warranty?

They have had it since tuesday and i have had no update so i called them.

they say there is no fault with the car yet when i said fine then ill come and collect it they said i cant as its at a specialist being tested, no fault but they sent it to a specialist!! OK!

This is Good morning,

With regards to our conversation yesterday (31/03/16) at 15.30 please could I have an update by 11 am on the diagnosis and repair of the transmission fault/noise on my Range Rover Sport (LR56 GGA) that I purchased from you on the 7th March 2016 as I will have to hire or borrow a vehicle for the weekend if my car is not going to be ready.

I understand now that the vehicle needs to be checked out by a gearbox specialist which I am told by Elite garage services that 3D transmissions in Reading now have the vehicle for diagnosis but both Elite garage services and yourselves are saying that there is no fault there.

I did have a Landover specialist (West 4x4, Waltham Chase) that looked briefly at the vehicle (road tested) and the noise and vibration was apparent to them almost instantly however Elite garage services and yourselves are saying that there is nothing there.

When I collected the vehicle there was no log book and the radio buttons that I was told that would be fixed before I collected the vehicle were not, Vince told me to come back and collect the log book once it turns up and he will have the buttons repaired, this was on 07/03/16 and to date I still have had no word on the log book or buttons.

The issues with this vehicle have been documented and as per the consumer rights act that came out in October 2015 I still have the right to reject the vehicle for a full refund in the first 30 days as the vehicle is not fit for purpose or not as described. See below for reference to the act.

Faults, repairs and refunds
Under the new act, if a fault renders the product not of satisfactory quality, not fit for purpose or not as described, then the buyer is entitled to reject it within the first 30 days.
Between 30 days and 6 months
If a fault comes to light after 30 days but before 6 months have passed then you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. It is assumed in law that the fault was present at the time of purchase unless the seller can prove otherwise. During this period, unless you have agreed otherwise, the seller (dealer) has only one opportunity to repair (or replace) the faulty vehicle after which, if they fail to repair it, you are entitled to a refund.
I have also found signs of a rear end accident which I have put right at my own expense i.e. the boot did not line up with the shuts itself etc. I do understand that this is a 10 year old vehicle and that there would be sings of wear and tear but nobody mentioned an accident when I first looked at purchasing the vehicle nor did they when I collected the vehicle.

I do not want to reject this vehicle as it was the vehicle I was looking for however it is my legal right to do so if the fault is not rectified.

I personally would reject it now, the garage are obviously giving you the run around and have been since you bought the car.

GIVE IT BACK AND RUN AWAY!!!!!

Plenty of other cars out there that you can choose from, it's easy to get attached to a car. But fall for a car that loves you back... this car has been chopped in as it needs money spent on it.

My money is on the dealer ducking and dodging you until you're out of your 30 consumer rights warranty.

Missing log book alone should be a big red warning flag..
