Hello everyone! RRS owner to be. Newbie

Hello I'm Mike I saw this forum and quite frankly I think it's the best out there I could find!

Recently I became a dad and it's been a great excuse to buy a big safe and prestigious car. The car I've loved for years the RRS.

Well I'm going to look at one tomorrow and I'm so excited. It's mint condition 08 plate low mileage.

Fsh
Upgraded alloys (khan)

Any advice I should look out for?

Cheers
Mike

My only advice is buy one with warranty, it also help if you can do repair work. The Range Rover requires a lot more attention than average SUV/truck.

Hey thanks for your reply.

This is a private sale without warranty. They have told me the car is in mint condition, just been serviced at 60,000 miles on the clock.

They said it is reliable and a good runner the seller seems very genuine.

What should i look out for guys/girls?

Is there a list of stuff to look out for on here that i can print off and take with me to the test drive?

Regards
Mike

You don't say what engine derivative this one has...most likely its fitted with the 2.7 diesel.... At that age it should have had the cam belts changed by means of age..either 105,000 miles or eight years old.
On these engines it is imperative that the timing cam belts are changed and all the front pulleys are changed together with the oil and water pump... It is a £1500 job at a dealers and so if this hasn't been done then use it as a bargaining tool ....!

Great cars...enjoy! And hopefully welcome to the club!

...and consider speaking to someone like Warranty Direct to get some cover on it.

Again, search this site for info on this. Now sold 2010 TDV8 Santorini black, lots of extras and best car I ever owned, and there's been a few. I will be back.

I came back with an L405 FFRR

Sorry this is the 2.7 to v6 version.

OK I'll get them to show me the service sheets to see if this has been done.

If my uncle does this job does the £1500 come down would you say?

Labour Is the expense really over the parts isn't it?

Really nervous because I have waited a long time for one of these. Hope it's reliable... I don't mind spending money on it but don't wanna be spending thousands every year. Surely these 2.7v6 aren't that unreliable are they?
Strong engine?
Good gearbox?
Solid all round cars?
Good safe family car for my newborn son?

I

I'm sure that all the ranges out there they can't be that bad can they? People wouldn't buy them as much as they do surely if they're going to be in the garage all the time?

Is it all horror stories or is there any of you with super reliable 2.7td ranges 08 plates or similar???

I love them they look awesome I just need and want some reliability not saying I can't afford to run it but I don't want to sitting at home whilst it's in the garage all the time.

My choices are literally between these x5 sport diesel 3.0 and 2.7td v6

If you've struggled to afford the car, and £1500 for a timing belt replacement is unaffordable to you then think very wisely before purchasing. Personally I think it would be madness not to go with an approved used from a main dealer. In the next 12 months you WILL spend money on a RRS,

So price up timing belt if it needs one, a warranty, £490 for tax , make sure all tyres have a lot of life, good brake discs, no grumbles or rumbles AT ALL. Makemsure it goes to full suspension height in a acceptable time. If it takes an age to get to maximum height walk away. Check for cracks in the wheels.... Infact- just do a full strip down rebuild to be sure there isn't a £2000 problem waiting 1000. Miles down the road.

I would say keep saving and go approved used. Actually what is your budget?

Thanks for the info mate

I haven't struggled to afford it and £1500 I could afford also it's just that I wanna be spending thousands every year.

Thanks I'll check everything Inside and out underneath etc. Check for noises check the suspension goes to max height in a reasonable time.

How long should this take approx? Minute? 30 seconds? this is my first test drive so am a RRS Virgin

My budget is 14,000

It's not the grey one with black wheels and black wrap on the bonnet is it?

Also try and drive more than one, if you've never drove such a car you're going to love the ride height and commanding feel. But try to drive a few just to get a feel for how they should drive/feel. There's many things to be aware of like shunting on pull off, holding gears to long, brake feel, electric hand brake noise.

Just a correction there, Ian - 7 years. Thumbs Up

Nearer half that at a good indy, labour rate dependant. The oil pump change is very important - it's not part of the LR service schedule, but issues have been had with the casing breaking where the cam belt tensioner is mounted, particularly in the 07/08MY range, so you would be well advised to get it done ASAP. No. Smile They have their issues, and need plenty of maintenance, but they're not unreliable. Thumbs Up

The core engine itself is very well proven with failure rates inline with others. TDV6 turbos fair better than the TDV8 and are not too bad.

Good gearbox?

Very good, but very important to maintain it. At 60k, I would look to have the box flushed now. Thumbs Up

Solid all round cars?

Yes. Complex, so issues can and will arise, but they're generally well designed cars. You will always hear horror stories, but we are here to help and can sometimes save you a fortune. Smile

Extremely. Thumbs Up

Only a second or two. The compressor will run a little longer to pressurise the gallery.

I suggest you spend as much time as possible searching on here and DISCO3 since it's impossible to go through everything. I note you are considering a remap from your other thread - I recommend you take the opportunity to blank the EGRs (07MY onwards requires a software patch that can be done with the remap) which are a common failure point. Wink

Good luck and enjoy. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Thanks so much for your response.

The air suspension is it just two option upper and lower or can you set to your desired height?

Suspension has 3 options, access (lowest) normal (middle) off road (highest). They are preset heights and you have no option to adjust them.

Watch here

You're obviously very new to RRS, so no offence but this does put you at risk of being very impressed with these cars and potentially buying a dog. Keep your head screwed on! Even a dog of a car is going to feel like a rolls Royce to you.

Great cars, however you MUST buy a car with warranty, plus a full service history, Main dealer preferable.
08 Sports were subject to a fuel pump recall, this should be itemised in the service book. Also make sure it is an 08, check the VIN.
I ran an 08 2.7, loved it, however loved it a lot more with a Pete Bell (BAS) remap. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.
