Last of a legend

end of an era http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20160129-th...r-defender ..
past my test in an airportable 90 rally rover eons ago and owned a Land Rover product in
some form for at least the last 16 years.. what a saddo Laughing

It will be interesting to see if anything actually does comes out as near as agricultural and at a reasonable
price in the coming years, the Series 1/11/111/Defender will be a hard act to follow in terms of longevity
Thumbs Up LR have a challenge on their hands to reproduce anything that was a classless and timeless Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Agree end of an era Sad

Shame the very thing that made LR what it is today and is responsible for people like me wanting a LR is basically being killed because they make more money on the Chelsea tractors Rolling Eyes

I just hope something as iconic rises from the ashes but considering how long they've had to prepare and fact nothing has been produced yet to take over I'm sceptical Confused

I heard twisted have bought 500 to give them 3 years business and utility companies have bought shed loads to store and roll out when they need replacements for existing vehicles Mr. Green Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

I still have a Defender and it is used every day, rebuilt it 5 years ago and it has sailed through every MOT since, love the fact that you can do just about anything on the old ones with a very basic tool kit.
My one is a 1995 and was built before they all went electronic – Sad day for Land Rover. Big Cry

Indeed a sad day to see the last defender roll off the production line having owned series 3's and defenders for many years.
I wait with baited breath for its replacement, but it has got big boots to fill

My last one before Range Rover Sport.

My (urban truck) 90 - stunning bit of kit, loved it. Not unfortunately the most practical vehicle for transporting people, hence now back to a RRS

Ironic really to hear such comments on a Chelsea Tractor forum... Whistle Also, ironic that so many Defenders are blinged up urban vehicles these days. At least they are like tractors to drive! Rolling with laughter

I hope that LR produce a Defender replacement that is comfortable and usable as a working vehicle. I'm not holding my breath though. I think the big-ticket vehicles are much more attractive to them now; I can't see LR producing a £20k 4x4 again and no one is going to buy a £40k "Defender" and then chuck feed bags and bales of straw in the back. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I would say old Landcruisers what else is there that can stand up to a beating and still be fixed on the go Confused

They may go American and drive Hummers yet again they are too wide for our roads.
The British have next to no car industry left – well can’t see army boys driving Bristol, Morgan, Caterham or McLaren. Rolling with laughter Lot of Landcruisers now sold

A lot of special forces in other countries already use the land cruisers so they are tried and tested, and probably abit more comfortable for the elite than a defner! Laughing 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I've been fortunate enough to have travelled through the "wilds" of the Stans and across the width of China to Beijing (by motorcycle) didn't see a single defender (did see a new shape FFRR in Tibet) The UN almost only use land cruisers The reason? Toyota is basically indestructible.

They won't be using "soft" vehicles such as Land Rovers that's for sure. It's all stuff like Foxhounds, Mastifs etc. now. All armoured and designed to protect the occupants from IEDs etc. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

could follow the Aussie Army who have taken delivery of both 4 and 6 wheel drive G Wagens as standard utility wagons..

I believe the British Army have a ready supply of LR's which are likely to be stockpiled.. and as for the Hummer, i thought the
US Army is now replacing that with the Oshkosh Another Pommie Bar Steward down under
