Are L494 windscreens made of sugar glass?

I've owned my RRS for just over 9 months now...in the time I've owned it I have done approx 20,000 miles....it is a 64 plate and I am shortly going to be on its 4th windscreen! The last three have all been genuine Pilkington Land Rover supplied but last a matter of weeks.... I think the list price is something like £1500 each and I'm dreading the phonecall with my insurer in the morning...

Am I plain unlucky or has anyone else had this problem... The slightest bit of grit hitting it instantly sends cracks across the whole screen rendering it useless....

Is this a quality control issue or am I just plain unlucky?

Are you using the same fitting company each time and are you going to them or are they coming to you? If they are coming to you, is the car perfectly level while they are working? The windscreen plays a part in increasing the torsional rigidity of the bodyshell so if the car is twisted when the new screen is installed, there can be stresses setup in it.

You might also think about dropping back from the car in front. Tailgating, if that is your habit, is ruinous to paintwork and windscreens. Mark

I have used the same company...each time the windscreen has been replaced it has been at their premises in near laboratory standards. The car has been left the full duration allowing the sealants to cure.

I drive a huge number of miles a year and am very very aware of the dangers of tailgating..(class one advanced pursuit, class one hgv & pcv)... My car has no other paint chips or pebble dashing and is currently unmarked. I don't work in a quarry and I'm invariably tootling along at 60mph....
Each time the screen has gone I was travelling at less than 50mph on average A roads....in fact last night I was on the A13 travelling out of London, the time before was the A2 near Blackwall Tunnel....

Maybe I'm just plain unlucky and I am just trying to determine whether anyone else is replacing their windscreen on a monthly basis...

So so cruel! Rolling with laughter
Must be just me then! Four windscreens in ten months! Cool! Though the local National Windscreens has said they do at least 2 a week! So that has given me some comfort....

Well then, I think you are just being very unlucky. Hopefully the insurance company will swallow it. Mark

I'd be raising it with JLR and your dealer to get the car checked.
