Make sure you purchase an Apple one, the cheap ebay ones do not work. 3.0 HSE RRS Stornaway (current)

I have the connector (with short lead to a lightening connector) as in your top picture, plugged into an official Land Rover iPod connectivity curly cable, and it charges my iPhone 6s whilst playing music etc no problemo. Try to put the Lightning plug upside down or blow some air into the port on the iPhone. Sometimes there is no contact and this may help. Regards etc.,
