Yep, copper is the way to go. No point lifting the body to replace the lot with genuine steel ones, only for them to corrode again...

Get a indie to do it,,you can always re-root the pipe when replacing,as long as it's not catching or rubbing on anything it will be fine,we do it all the time when the pipes run over tank etc.make sure they use copper pipe.

Doesn't have to be a LR indi either, any decent garage will be able to splice in some copper pipe, it's quite straight forward as long as their flaring tool can cope with steel pipes. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi all . Had my 2006 rrs s/c for nearly a month now , and after checking over all the well known issues , and seeing that the brake pipes were an advisory for the last 2 years I thought I'd take her down to my ex place of work (an mot station) for a quick look underneath . Both me and My old mot tester couldn't believe the state of the rear sections above the rear axle. We spent this afternoon replacing the corroded sections . Not too bad a job , made easier by removing the exhaust and aluminium heat shields . I have a hand held brake pipe flaring tool so could cut the steel originals and flare with new unions and join in new copper ones that were simply cut to length and shaped against the removed ones . When I worked there I saw many a mondeo pop a brake pipe , and they were in a hard to see area along the side of the fuel tank , so either missed by a tester or passed and advised . Any 4x4 should be tested with a decelerarometer (tester will usual go on a short test drive and brake , the device will measure the braking force) . hope this helps guide anyone with a new purchase |
