Exploding Brake Pipe :-/

Was off to Ireland for the New Year and as MOT ran out whilst I'd be away, popped round to my local place to get it done. Idea was to leave v early Wednesday morning so as avoid storm Frank and flooding along the A75

Obviously as part of this, they stomp on the brakes to check the efficiency. Car passed OK but when I drove it off, noticed the brake pedal was a bit spongy though it worked ok (I stopped!). Dare say the car wouldn't have passed if they'd noticed that!

Went out a bit later to run some errands, check tyre pressures etc and the red brake light was on on the dashboard. Strange. I investigated and found brake fluid level v low, so popped to the local filling station and topped up. As I came back to my house, I noticed a puddle outside where I park my car and on checking it found it to be brake fluid - grr... Round to the MOT station just before they closed and they had it up on the ramp and told me that one of the rear pipes, up under the prop shaft/rear diff area had corroded and burst Sad Apparently they had seen this before but had no option to fix it currently.

Back home and onto RRSport.co.uk and a search soon brought up corroded rear brake pipes and a stunning variety of pricing in their repair - anything from £150 - £1350+VAT!

Rang up Disco Mikey and although he might possibly have been able to do it yesterday evening, getting the car to Dundee from London was going to be problematic, so decided to forget that. It was late and I couldn't find anyone local who might have been able to help. Borrowed my g/friend's RAV4 and have hired her a small car for 10 days.

According to DM, the thing to do is to cut the OE pipe to remove the corroded area and replace with copper brake pipe, as opposed to getting the (doubtless expensive) LR part and having to dismantle half the car to get it fitted. I'm quite happy with that solution as I won't be suffering from corrosion there in the future and am not such a purist as to have to have LR parts only.

Anyone know someone in SE London/Kent that might do this? Don't want to go too far on dodgy brakes (or could get it AA'd).

AFT that this should happen just before I left for Ireland. Fortunately the journey (apart from ferry crossing) was absolutely fine but I've had to leave a load of stuff behind and haven't got my towing vehicle now I'm over Sad

Thanks for the advice and chat Disco Mikey!

Yep, copper is the way to go. No point lifting the body to replace the lot with genuine steel ones, only for them to corrode again... Rolling Eyes

Sorry, can't help with any local suggestions. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Get a indie to do it,,you can always re-root the pipe when replacing,as long as it's not catching or rubbing on anything it will be fine,we do it all the time when the pipes run over tank etc.make sure they use copper pipe.

Doesn't have to be a LR indi either, any decent garage will be able to splice in some copper pipe, it's quite straight forward as long as their flaring tool can cope with steel pipes. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

Brake pipes

Hi all . Had my 2006 rrs s/c for nearly a month now , and after checking over all the well known issues , and seeing that the brake pipes were an advisory for the last 2 years I thought I'd take her down to my ex place of work (an mot station) for a quick look underneath . Both me and My old mot tester couldn't believe the state of the rear sections above the rear axle. We spent this afternoon replacing the corroded sections . Not too bad a job , made easier by removing the exhaust and aluminium heat shields . I have a hand held brake pipe flaring tool so could cut the steel originals and flare with new unions and join in new copper ones that were simply cut to length and shaped against the removed ones . When I worked there I saw many a mondeo pop a brake pipe , and they were in a hard to see area along the side of the fuel tank , so either missed by a tester or passed and advised . Any 4x4 should be tested with a decelerarometer (tester will usual go on a short test drive and brake , the device will measure the braking force) . hope this helps guide anyone with a new purchase
