Hi, I'm currently looking into buying my first RRS, the lease on my current BMW 330d coming to an end shortly.

But I don't know whether to buy an older pre-facelift model with reasonable miles and hold some money back for repairs etc or buy a later one.

I think I have narrowed it down to a TDV8 as the best option.

Thoughts on the below would be appreciated

A facelift model is a good idea, but equally, don't over-stretch the budget for either. Getting a good one is important either way.

If you are going to be buying a facelift model, bear in mind the 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 is the most reliable of the engines, and the 3.6 TDV8 is the least reliable; if it were me, while I would consider a TDV8 in the earlier vehicles, with the 3.0 available, I'd be taking that option.

They are also cars that like to be used, so particularly low mileage isn't necessarily better.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Wow, it's so confusing

From what I'd read on the site, it led me to the TDV8 option. What is the difference between the TDV6 and the SDV6 ?

So again the question would be, an earlier TDV8 keeping budget available, or a later TDV6/SDV6.

The 3.0 TDV6 is the updated version of the original 2.7 TDV6, with twin turbos. For MY12 the name was changed to SDV6 (as it was called in the D4 all along ), a few extra HP were squeezed out and it was paired with the new 8-speed box (this is the biggest difference and highly recommended if your budget reaches that far).

The TDV8 is a great engine, but it has a habit of blowing turbos more so than it's V6 counterparts. The power gains vs the 2.7 are significant, which makes it very popular, but less so vs 3.0. In 2010 the 3.6 was in run-out as the 4.4 TDV8 was to take over in the FFRR, but this never made it into the RRS1.

If you can comfortably afford the facelift model, I would definitely go for it (more issues ironed out).  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I'm looking for a RRS 3.0TDV6 or SDV6 (prob just out of my price range of about £25-26k) & would be very grateful if those of you with a lot of experience of these could advise any must haves, and certainly must checks prior to buying.

So I think the decision is made. I definitely want a facelift version. Question is now TDV8 or a TDV6 and have it remapped for a little extra power.
