Nasty odour

hi, I've recently noticed that every now and then I get a rotten egg type smell through the vents, it's only now and again and doesn't smell for long, it's not really bad even, (example) the first couple times I smelt it I asked other half if she had broke wind,ha, I got a sturdy NO I HAVE NOT reply but had to ask Mr. Green it seems to be since I've done a coolant change, (used genuine coolant and distilled water 50/50) and/or since started using in car heater, we have only had 1 frost morning and the FBH seemed to be working ok/correct.

I did read somewhere that air con can smell similar if need re gassing, (don't no if that's correct or not) but I think mine does need re gassing as it's not ice cold when on.

Battery seems good also,
any ideas. Idea

Could you be smelling the exhaust from another vehicle being drawn in to the car? Petrol engines make that smell if they are not running right.

There are two types of cabin filter available for the RRS: with activated charcoal and without it. The type with activated charcoal are much better at absorbing extraneous whiffs from other vehicles IMHO. At the first sniff hitting the recycle button seems to work especially well; But remember to turn it off again or you will soon be one of those numptys driving around with steamed up windows.

If you haven't changed the cabin filter for a while then try taking it out, setting off an air con cleaning bomb as per the instructions and then fitting a new (activated charcoal) cabin filter. Voila! lovely fresh smelling car.

The Comma brand air con cleaning bomb works well. Thumbs Up

Edit: If your air con isn't working you should have it regassed sooner rather than later because when its not running the seals dry out causing more leaks and potentially it will cost a fortune to fix it properly. Halfords have an allegedly idiot proof machine that automatically regasses the system. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi paddi, pretty sure it's not other car fumes I did also think that myself but few times smelling it I have not been near any traffic, had a Indy full service about 2 months ago APPARENTLY they changed all filters, as for air con, I put both temp dials on cold put vents on face settings and turn fan up full so should be ice cold, am I correct. Mr. Green

Will def get air con bomb and re gassed this weekend if needed. Thumbs Up

Yes I'm sure Ned's advice to check battery for anything nasty like bulging or low electrolyte makes sense in case the alternator is cooking it makes sense ; but please wear goggles and gloves as I've heard too many horror stories about exploding batteries and lost eyesight!!

Re the air con test again yes but I think the standard advice is to also press the recycle button. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Done a check on battery and alternator and battery seems good, alternator Amber light and red, Amber normal, red over charging, will it be suspected bad alternator causing overcharge, air con nice and cold this morning but will get it tested anyway,

Have a suspicion that what you're smelling is the catalytic converter. I think the rotten egg whiff is only produced by petrol engines though? Air movement around the car can be quite random, especially if you're stationary or in slow moving traffic, so takes a certain set of criteria for the 'zorst gases to be drawn into the fresh air vents. That's one theory anyway Wink

Don't think alternator is overcharging, just tested partners car and reading is exact same so suspect the tester I purchased from eBay is not reading correct, onboard sat nav screen diagnostics reads 12.5v+ just ignition, and 14v+ with engine running.

Gilly my van had a rotten egg smell have you checked the electrolite in the battery cells presuming you have that type of battery one of my battery cells collapsed this gives off the egg smell.
I but a new battery on and No more smell. Is your RRS petrol or derv??

Hi ned, it's derv, will have a look and check, had bonnet up yesterday and done a long visual and had good smell round battery and engine bay, couldn't smell anything, just strange that smell is only maybe once every journey and only smells for max 10/15 seconds.
From what I've noticed it's also only when heater fan on and on hot settings.
