Could you be smelling the exhaust from another vehicle being drawn in to the car? Petrol engines make that smell if they are not running right.

Hi paddi, pretty sure it's not other car fumes I did also think that myself but few times smelling it I have not been near any traffic, had a Indy full service about 2 months ago APPARENTLY they changed all filters, as for air con, I put both temp dials on cold put vents on face settings and turn fan up full so should be ice cold, am I correct.

Yes I'm sure Ned's advice to check battery for anything nasty like bulging or low electrolyte makes sense in case the alternator is cooking it makes sense ; but please wear goggles and gloves as I've heard too many horror stories about exploding batteries and lost eyesight!!

Done a check on battery and alternator and battery seems good, alternator Amber light and red, Amber normal, red over charging, will it be suspected bad alternator causing overcharge, air con nice and cold this morning but will get it tested anyway, |

Have a suspicion that what you're smelling is the catalytic converter. I think the rotten egg whiff is only produced by petrol engines though? Air movement around the car can be quite random, especially if you're stationary or in slow moving traffic, so takes a certain set of criteria for the 'zorst gases to be drawn into the fresh air vents. That's one theory anyway |

Don't think alternator is overcharging, just tested partners car and reading is exact same so suspect the tester I purchased from eBay is not reading correct, onboard sat nav screen diagnostics reads 12.5v+ just ignition, and 14v+ with engine running. |

Gilly my van had a rotten egg smell have you checked the electrolite in the battery cells presuming you have that type of battery one of my battery cells collapsed this gives off the egg smell.

Hi ned, it's derv, will have a look and check, had bonnet up yesterday and done a long visual and had good smell round battery and engine bay, couldn't smell anything, just strange that smell is only maybe once every journey and only smells for max 10/15 seconds.
