Turbo whistle tdv6

Hi guys, new member here so be gentle!
I've recently bought a 2007 hse and I noticed the turbo seems to whistle above 2000rpm, is this normal for this car? I've read that certain cars whistle more than others and I really hope this is one of them and I've not got a faulty turbo.

Welcome. Thumbs Up

I don't recall mine whistling in particular before it was de-catted ( Mr. Green ). Is the exhaust definitely still standard?

If you could post a video/sound recording it might help. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

The exhaust isn't the standard "down facing" rear pipes, they are around 3" oval shaped, could that be the cause?

The tailpipes couldn't cause that alone - it's only what lurks in front of them that would make any difference. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Is there an easy way to tell if it's been decatted? And I mean a really easy way, my technical knowledge is less than zero!!!

If you take a look undeneath, you can see if the standard cat is there (it's also possible to cut it open and weld instead of replacing). Thumbs Up

Looks like this:

It's above the transmission undertray, so you can either look over the top or take it off (a few 10mm screws). Thumbs Up

There's also a centre silencer, and two rear ones, but I think it's basically the cat that muffles the whistle.

Th turbo may just be more vocal than others, it does happen

However, check the boost system for leaks, in particular, any damp oily patches on the intercooler and hoses Thumbs Up

Is that an easy check for a garage to carry out Disco_mikey?

Depends how good the garage is Thumbs Up

Nothing particularly difficult mind, but the 2 smaller turbo hoses are buried behind the wheel arch liner, so a little time consuming to inspect

I'll get it to an independent LR garage shortly methinks, I'm not paying main dealer prices!

Don't suppose I could be cheeky and ask for a free opinion on it while you're in the area? nothing intrusive just to listen to it, I'd come to wherever you'll be in dunf.

Massive thank you to disco_mikey for popping down today, it seems the turbo is to blame for the noise, I've only had the car a week so it was a phone call to the garage that sold me it and credit to them it's going in on Monday for diagnostics and possible new turbo.
