Newbie just joined

Hi guys,

Just joined this forum as I was thinking of getting a range rover sport. Currently have a Mercedes cls55 amg but I'm fancying a change. Im looking at getting a 2005/6 4.4 petrol one and spend around £9/10k which will leave me with a little bit of change from selling my Mercedes hopefully. Main reason for wanting a change is I'd like something cheaper to run as I want to get a mk1 golf to rebuild as a project.

For that price I'm obviously looking at a higher mileage one but I'm no stranger to that, the Mercedes has just ticked over 129k miles.
But, is there many problems to look out for around the 100k mile mark?

Anybody selling one that fancies a swap with mine get in touch! Haha (needs a few things doing which I plan on doing over the next few weeks burger now it's stored in my garage not moving!)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

For that budget you'll be looking at the very cheapest ones, which, unless you are very careful/lucky will probably have existing faults. They are also quite complex, and wouldn't be my choice for a "cheaper" car. Having said that, the 4.4 petrol is probably the least desirable one, so you may be able to find someone who is desperate to sell, and if you like doing the work yourself, then you can obviously save money.

The 4.4 BMW V8 also has a weak (pressurized) cooling system, and once it gets to around 100K miles, starts bursting hoses. Mine twice split hoses, and left me stranded, so I had to replace the lot, as I lost confidence in it.

Yes LOL at cheaper to run!

Interesting Photobucket pics of your car. I take it you're removing the lifting kit?

Thanks for the reply, as for cheaper to run I just mean by fuel as I don't use my car that often but at the moment my amg gets around 170/180 miles to £100/110. Maintenance wise I'm expecting it to be that same or similar to the amg. Realistically, mpg wise, what do people get from the 4.4?

I've not really used photo bucket much so not sure what pics are on it but the factory air suspension failed so I originally replaced it with an aftermarket air kit but I had a few problems with that so its on a set of coilovers now

The 4.4 V8 petrol is very very rare, and the reason was it had similar fuel consumption to the supercharged but not the go! It's a BMW V8. The 4.2S/C was much more common so you may want to include that in your search as there are many more of them around. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Ah, I will bare that in mind when looking at them though, main focus is getting my Mercedes serviced and sorted ready to sell then I'll be starting to look into it all a bit more. Would prefer a s/c one but was looking at a n/a due to fuel. Sounds stupid not to get a s/c one now
