knocking noise

read several threads on here about the dreaded knocking noise mostly associated with either anti roll bar bushes worn or possibily lower steering column / uj joints replacing or lower arm replacement etc . my question is this , my 2008 tdv8 with 88,000 miles on the clock just passed its m.o.t last week but i have noticed for some time i have this knocking noise that could i guess be any of the suggested faults , so i wonder how has this passed its m.o.t or is worn anti roll bar bushes acceptable or isit something else ??? confused Confused

I think the steering column UJ is more akin to feeling like you are steering with a 50p piece, ie notchy.
It is more than likely one or more of the wishbone bushes, which only shows when the car is driven over a pothole/bump.there is not much movement when up on the ramps, so usually they are missed on MOTs.
The bushes themselves are expensive, and hard to remove, so most garages tend to talk you into getting the whole wishbone replaced, if you do one, you never know when the other two bushes will fail. I had three wishbones done last year for £750

Had my steering UJ replaced last week, TDV8 with 85k. Difference is really noticeable, had already done bushes, rollbar and ball joints previously and there was still a 'shake' through the steering in certain positions as you pulled away from low speed, all gone now. I would say that the symptoms are as codfather described , noise when you go over a pothole / bump , I will ask a local garage to have a look at wishbones etc , could be expensive then !![/quote]

Hi Alfie, the ARC bushes are not an MOT failure. I tried to get them done on warranty but since they are not an MOT failure issue they didn't cough up Rolling Eyes My guess its them

Front lowers would be my bet if they haven't been done yet. Thumbs Up

Drive along at low speed then tap the brakes, and see if they knock. Wink Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I have a 2008 TDV8 purchased a year ago from a JLR dealer in Essex with 48,000 from new (Grange Motors),a week after I got it I heard a knocking sound when travelling over pot holes or rough road surfaces and there are lots around here.I took the vehicle back and front lower wishbone wear was diagnosed, these were replaced under warranty and off I went, next day same problem, back in again and the front ARB bushes were replaced, took it away and same problem but after reading a posting on here regarding updated ARB clamps I asked if they had been replaced,NO was the answer, they were replaced and so far all has been well for 4k miles.
My JLR warranty runs out next month and I have renewed it for peace of mind as we all know these lovely cars are very complicated and can be a money pit,HOPE THIS HELPS
