Replace or charge Battery

My RRS 2010 HSE TDV6 has had no problems with the battery until today, while parked for about an hour had radio on, went to start and nothing apart from flashing lights and low power warning on screen.

Called Green Flag who started car and checked alternator was charging, as I only do occaisional short journeys he thought battery was just run down and suggested three things... drive car for say more than 25 miles, run engine in drive for an hour or so or charge battery.

He thought I would probably need to replace the battery soon.

So my question is shall I just drive and charge battery, worried about disconnecting battery to charge with my Ring Smart charger in case messes stuff up.

I rang my dealer who want £312 for fitting new battery..!! Arrived - RRSport 2016 HSE SDV6 HSE

Get it on the charge overnight. No need to disconnect anything, but make sure the negative cable's on the ground point, not the terminal. Thumbs Up

It takes a long time to charge the battery by driving - far more than 25 miles... Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Ground point, where is that? Why is it different to terminal?

yes, I thought it would need a lot more than 25 miles...

There are ground points on the body just in front of the engine bay fusebox. It needs to be used so the Battery Monitoring System will see the charge - using the terminal would bypass this. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

@ Lost for Words, will take a look to see if I can find them, thanks.

@ Col, I have looked at various batteries for RRS and like the one you mention it is 190mm high and the existing one is 175mm high, also length is 8mm longer is this a problem?

I found this Varta one at Jag-Land UK, is it any good? seems cheap at £69.80?

Hi

If the Battery you have on the car is only 175mm high including terminals then I'm inclined to think you may have the wrong battery fitted. I only mentioned that particular battery because it is the one I fitted and was a direct replacement for the original one which although Branded L/R was made by Varta and I saw no reason to pay L/R's over inflated price.

Cheers
Col

Most original landrover batteries are wet cell type's,,,, unscrew the caps and make sure the cells are topped up. I have been caught out in the past sitting with the radio on for an hour resulting in a flat battery.
Unknown at the time it's not just the radio that is on, basically everything is still active so it doesn't really take a great length of time to run the battery down. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Okay, so had it on charge all day today, found the ground points, thanks Lost for Words.

It seemed to hold voltage overnight before charge so am hopeful it is just not getting enough charge with the short journeys I do.

Will see how it goes over next few days and if I have to get a battery then so be it, will take a look at the various ones online.

@ Col I think I must have mesured the height wrong, difficult with battery fitted but it might well be 190mm high, thanks for you input. Arrived - RRSport 2016 HSE SDV6 HSE

Just as a point of interest, if a CETK battery charger were to be hard wired in where would the negative connection need to be made, the negative terminal or one of the earth points?

Cheers

I think I may buy a new battery as I will be worrying that it won't start and I will get stuck somewhere.

So looking at how to fit a new battery, I think it is safe to wait until the display has gone off, disconnect old battery, not sure if any order like pos or neg first, and same with reconnection.

Also in the attached photo I wondered what this black flexible connection to the right of Positive terminal is for?
Is it some kind of vent for gases or drain?

I was thinking of getting this battery from Tayna as will be renewing car within the next year, not sure if it has this gas or drain connection though, or if it is even necessary....

Always negative then positive to disconnect, and reverse to reconnect; the reason for this is that the negative side of the battery is grounded to the bodywork - touch the body and the positive terminal to undo it and... Thumbs Up

Thanks Lost for Words, so disconnect Neg first, then Positive, wrap pos lead in cloth as someone on here suggested to prevent it touching any metalwork.
Remove battery, fit new one, connect Positive first? then Neg...

Someone on here also said that all that was need on reconnect is to reset date & clock?

Sorry to go on a bit, but things aint as simple as they used to be..... Arrived - RRSport 2016 HSE SDV6 HSE
