Engine Management light on - Advice wanted

For a few weeks I've seemed to have a lack of power when cold compared to normal. i.e. when just gently driving I have had to press the pedal further to make it go. If floored it seems goes as it should.

Today after been parked up for a week it struggled to start - cut out 3 times just after starting, on the fourth go it kept running . I was over 80 miles from home so once running I drove it home with out stopping. Once again when cold it was sluggish but once warmed up seemed better but not perfect.

Engine light came on within 50 yards of driving and has not gone off. Home now but light still on when restarted.

Any advise or ideas what it could be?

Thanks in advance

Boost.

Could literally be one or more of 1000+ faults. The only way you are going to get a definitive answer to your question is by having the codes read. What you could try, is disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for around 15 minutes. This should 'reset' the ECU. Then reconnect and try the car again. If the fault is gone, happy days; if it comes back immediately or soon after, then you know it's a genuine fault and not a glitch. Good luck.

I'm tempted to say you have "Boost issues"... Laughing

Sounds like EGRs - my recommendation is to blank them (software patch needed - consider having it as part of a remap Mr. Green ). Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Is there a year you cannot blank? I seem to think mine falls into the 'cannot blank' category! Mines a 2007 TDV6

Don't joke about the boost issues! I've had that one - hence the post on how to change a turbo!

Nope, all can be blanked, but EU4 vehicles (07MY onwards) require an additional software patch to do so. As mentioned, it's normally done as part of a remap (but not essential). I recommend you choose a reputable company like BAS or Alive to provide such. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Code read today-

P0489 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Bank A - Circuit Low

P0490 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control - Circuit High

Thinking of blanking them off and getting the software patch. Already had a remap so I hope I don't loose it...Shouldn't loose the remap with a software patch should it?

Just as I thought. Wink

The patch should be based on your existing software, and there would be no reason to modify anything else. Do be careful whom you choose to do it though, as some can make a real mess of the software, and make sure they're aware that it's been mapped. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I can do the patch with your existing remap. , just not sure when I can get back to Lincs. It may be possible a day next week, but running out of days before I go the Pyrenees for another week after the Les Comes LandRover party on Spain. Bodsys Brake Bible

Remap or blank? Or both?
Yes to all, but istr the tdv8 has a moulded air intake butterfly valve which needs dremmelling off , unlike the easily removable tdv6 butterfly valve. Bodsys Brake Bible

Bodsy,

Nice one, how much for the software patch fix?

I suppose I can run it without the patch with the blanks fitted? Just the light will be on?

Cheers.............Boost

Yes, you can run it with the Blanks in place. Don't forget to remove the butterfly valve.

I'll drop you a message. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

EGR's blanked and butterfly valve removed. All OK now and back on song! Even the engine light has gone out and not returned! Does it still need the software patch?

The light may stay out for ages (or even forever), but equally, could come back on at any time. I believe there is also a very small chance that the fault can still cause restricted power, so best to get it done IMO. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
