Very low access height!!

Driving home from work to day and this catches my eye
The back wheel sits right inside the rear arch , I think this looks great but not sure how low the normal ride height sits.
Any guess as too how many mm drop this is ?

Can you change access height only using IID Tool but leave Normal Ride height and Off-road height at their factory settings? 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

No mate I don't think you can , if you lower the normal ride height say by 30mm then I think each mode will be 30mm lower

That's correct; the IID Tool lets you change the basic height but the car's system maintains a 50mm (roughly) difference between each height setting. So if you lower the standard height by 25mm, the access height will be 25mm lower and off road height will be 25mm lower.

There are other ways of doing the height changes that allow for more finesse but are more expensive. For example, this system allows you to select ride heights without using the car's height switch. It allows you to run at the lower height at speeds over the default 50km/h without the system going back up to normal height. The company do an off road version that allows much greater ground clearnace to be slected (that's why I found them - I'm not interested in the low-rider look).

Interesting! Not into the low rider look myself on my sport but was curious as I have often found that access height is still abit to high for loading and unloading, especially large heavy items with the rear seats folded down.
Do you use that Mudtech module on your car RRSTDV8? I like the idea of an extra 4 inches ground clearance in off-road mode Laughing Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

No, I keep toying with buying the off road version but it's a bit far down my list at the mo. Got a feeling that suspension and gearbox will be needing work / replacements in the next 6 months...as it's my daily driver as well as toy that takes precedence! Rolling with laughter

But I am very interested in the off road module - as you say, adding 5 inches to the ground clearance at the flick of a switch has its appeal. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That looks a lot like the LLAMS system that was designed in Australia a few years back - I did hear that the design had been stolen by other companies and sold as their own design.

I don't know about "stolen" but the concept and look are very similar aren't they. Doing a quick currency conversion, and assuming prices are correct, the Oz one is cheaper too. Wonder how much shipping would be. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I have an early version of LLAMs fitted and it works very well. It was developed by a Landrover enthusiast with considerable development. I am not sure what intellectual property protections he put in place.

He did say some overseas buyers had bought some kits and soon after competitive kits were on the market - I am not saying whether Mudtech is one of those as I don't know - they may have very well developed theirs independently.

With the kit I have I can drive around at onroad height -20mm and it will go down to Access Height -20mm but not all the time - depending on the stance of the car it will go down but then start to rise. I guess that access height -20mm is right on the limit for how far the suspension can go down.

When offroad, I say at onroad height at + 30mm or +50mm depending on the terrain, so gong at 40kph and no drop at 50kph - great value on our higher speed tracks. For the real hard stuff I find offroad height +50mm to cover everything - I believe if you get stuck at that height it will still go to extended +50mm but I have not found myself in that situation. I also believe that Super Extended +50mm is actually beyond the physical height capabilities of the suspension.

So if you need to drive offroad faster than 50kph or you need to get heights higher than offroad without bottoming out then LLAMs is the go - at the other end my 87yo mum has no issue getting into my car at access height - 20mm.

Cheers

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened like you suggest - enthusiast who didn't fully understand IP and how to protect it. IP protection on the international stage is expensive, however, so no surprise to see a "little guy" getting done over.

As for the range of movement, it seems to me that the full 125mm extension of the suspension is really only of use if one found a particular lump or step that can't be avoided. But I'd have thought one wouldn't use it very often at all. I'd like to be able to go to extended mode before an obstacle rather than wait for the system to react to a grounding event; that's where these systems are useful. Plus, as you mention, being able to run at a raised height above 50kph. IID Tool allows increased height but it's all the time unless you fiddle about loading and unloading height calibrations.

One problem, I saw mentioned on Disco3, with fully extending the suspension is that you can drop a halfshaft out of the diff in extreme circumstances! Of course, the other issue is that if you raise it on stilts you have no spare droop on uneven ground - a wheel will hang in the air if there is a hole; one of the reasons that the LR system works so well so often is that the suspension does a great job of keeping tyres in contact with the ground for so much of the time. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I also have the old LLAMS.

Very happy with it, use quite often the functions, great off road.

Will not comment on the Mudtech one for personal reason, but it got similar functions and some slight differences as the LLAMS '08 RRS TDV8
