MY12 RRS cutting out losing all power

I have my Sport 3 months and the other day I was driving in traffic. I felt the car shake slightly once or twice as I was in traffic coming to a junction after just leaving work. When I got to junction the car cut out and I lost all power and the only light showing was the battery in red. The autobox returned to P. I tried to start the car and it did straight away with no problem and I went home 2 miles with no further issues. Did a small drive later that night and no issues. Then the next morning as I was driving into work same thing happened as I was turning into work. About 100 meters before it shaked a little and as I was turning into work place at a real slow pace the car did the same thing. Lost all power with only the red battery light showing. This time I put the car into P and she started straight away again. I rang the garage and they said to bring it in so I drove the 20 miles to them. I thought it did shake once on the way but no issues driving there. They plugged the car in and found no faults, They then checked the wiring around the battery and said that was ok. They wanted to keep the car but had no courtesy car to give me. So they did a full reset I think and told me if it happened again to get onto them and they would arrange a courtesy car and take mine in to find out what was wrong with it. It has been ok since I left the dealer. I am wondering if anyone has come across this before as I have not seen any posts that are the same? The dealer has said they have not come across this before either.

Has 3yr warranty Dr Rob but not 100% sure off of who as the OH bought the car. They are away and haven't said to them there are issues.

Anyway as I said dealer looked over it and couldn't find anything wrong. Had to go to parents yesterday so that involved a 180 mile trip mainly on motorway. No problems until I was returning as I was joining Motorway I heard a chunky noise or juddering when the car was changing gears. Anyway that was it. Anyway this morning I went over to the shops and decided I would come back home via a twisty road just to see if the gearbox was playing up a bit. I had left the shop and was at the traffic lights when amber lights lit up on the car. First fault to show was Electric Stability Brake fault, HDC fault showed up then and finally Gearbox Fault showed up. I couldn't pull the car in so I drove it home the shortest way. There was no issue or limp mode driving home. I looked at the faults and the first 2 were showing but not the gearbox fault. I plan on getting onto the dealer in the morning and shipping it back into them ASAP.

I am just wondering if anyone can give me a heads up to what the main issues could be? From reading here it could be anything. Any help is appreciated

It could be one of the most common problems:

Weak battery (charge it overnight with a good smart charger)

Blown or non OE brake light bulbs (check and/or replace with OE)

Faulty brake pedal switch (order on eBay or from Duckworths and replace - it is a 5 minute job)

Just a guess but my money would be on the infamous brake pedal switch because it sounds as if your issues occur when braking. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks Paddi. It just cut out again there now. Just went to local diy shop and left there and then stopped at traffic light it cut out again.

Just rang the oh as they are at their sisters on the other side of the world. Was asking them if they noticed anything odd and they said no it was fine on Tuesday when they were mainly driving it last. But they did say to take the peaches out of the fridge. Seems they had the fridge on all the time since Tuesday but that would hardly be the cause.

Paddi just read your thread on replacing faulty brake pedal switch and I think my money is on that too. Just a quick question on part number XKB500110 does this fit RRS MY 12? As the one I have seen on ebay says upto MY10. Thanks for your help.

Hi Lost,

I don't know but if you call site sponsor Advanced Motor Factors in Southampton and ask to speak to Steve I'm sure he could advise you of the correct part and supply it very quickly at a good price. Advanced really do provide a great service.
Don't forget the possible low battery issue as well - if the voltage drops below 12 then some of the electronics won't function properly and all sorts of things can happen.
Best of luck.. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Anyway just a quick update. I was away on hols and just back so sent the car to the dealer yesterday. They came back that they think they know what's wrong and its a camshaft sensor fault or wire leading to it. Anyway they want to keep my car to make sure they have fixed the issue. If it shows up again they said they will have to replace the sensor.

Be sure to update again when you get it back please.

It's amazing how frequently cars after returned after some expensive work only for the PBO to find the fault is still present.

Sounds as if so far all they have done is check the wiring to camshaft position sensor? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I am thinking the same Paddi. They have the car since Thursday. There was a wire lose I was told Thursday. Friday it was to do with the sensor and they wanted to keep it to see if the fault reappears and that they wanted to hold onto the until today or tomorrow. As I was away today I told hem I would call them tomorrow to see what the story was. Fingers crossed I twill get it back tomorrow FIXED Very Happy

BTW is it expensive to replace that sensor? Car is covered warranty wise

Looking at the workshop manual for the TDV6 - says to replace the camshaft position sensor (CMP) it is necessary only to remove the LH EGR valve to gain access to the sensor. So doesn't sound like a huge job (an hour?). Sensors usually seem to cost between £40 and £150.

Add 'Land Rover Tax' to that and it will be £600 please sir I suppose. But they'll wash with a gritty old rag for free! 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Just a quick update. They are replacing the sensor now as the quick fix has not worked.. Waiting for part to come in and check that car is fine before we get it back.

Just another update. It seems I misunderstood over the phone what the fault is and its actually a Crankshaft Sensor not a camshaft sensor that has gone. So it seems that the gearbox has to be taken out to replace this and its about a 7 hour job. Part only arrived in today. They said they are hoping to start tomorrow as they have a couple of mechanics in and if not Monday. Sad
