125,000 mile TDV8. Change?

So, the question running thru my grey cells is whether to change the trusty (tempting fate) TDV8 once I reach 135k miles & the WD warranty expires. I really don't want an RRS without a warranty but I just love the car. She's spotless Tonga green with alpaca interior. Always serviced on the nod with Lindacre Ipswich. Now worth about £10k so I'd need to spend £20k more to get basically the same car with (more likely SDV6) with circa 50k miles on the clock & warrantyable. I do about 18k miles (business & pleasure) a year.

Things that have been changed in the last 30k miles include two wheel bearings, new battery, new alternator & the ARC bar bushes. Never let me down apart from when the alternator failed a year or so ago and the battery went kaput a month back. If it wasn't for the possibility of the dreaded & expensive turbo failure I'd keep her going.

Thoughts? Confused

A difficult one. If you do 18k a year, it's perhaps less worthwhile getting a lower mileage car. I guess you need to think about what you'd do in the event of a major failure, and if possible, put some money aside. There's also the devil-you-know element.

If it were me, I think I'd be most tempted to keep it another year or two. Thumbs Up

Thanks Lost for Words, appreciate your thoughts. The sensible thing to do is probably change, but when you know a car and how its been treated, the words 'devil you know' come to mind....I will be really sad to see her go.. low mileage TDV8's are like hens teeth so that's probably not a viable option & the SDV6 is a great car but doesn't have that V8 rumble!! TBH, I think it's very difficult to pick the perfect moment to sell a car, on all fronts, so it's probably best to go with your heart or gut instinct. Thumbs Up

I've just shelled out for a large, body-off job including a new torque converter and new turbo; despite this, or rather, as a result of this, I'm more happy with the car than ever. Very Happy Still large to-do and wish lists though. Laughing Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I'm in a similar position - my TDV8 has 105k miles and I'm doing about 25k miles a year currently. The issue is the "cost to change". As you say, you'd probably spend £20k to replace it. A double turbo change is about £5k at a dealership. The other big ticket items such as new ARBs are about £1.5k per bar.

If you're happy with it as it is then stick £5k aside for emergency big bill stuff and carry on enjoying it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I agree, keep it. If it's only worth 10k it's not worth getting rid of. As RRSTDV8 says, put a few grand in the bank and enjoy it for another 40-50k miles. Why not see how much she will do with good repairs and a good maintenance plan.

Good call Dr Rob. Wouldn't be much I guess? Alloys refurbed & a rear bumper scuff...probably £350 or so. Will keep trawling the £30k RRS ads, but will probably still be with the old Sport in 12 months time! Very Happy

I was half thinking the same. I put my TDV8 in for a service a few months ago, while I was at the dealer I test drove a 2013 RRS. The interior and extra gadgets were nice. The newer gearbox was also nice. The engine didn't feel so great compared to the TDV8. I couldn't justify the extra 20k to change. Although a month after the test drive a turbo failed on my car. Two turbos later at £3.8k maybe I should have taken the 2013 car.

I've now got my eye on c63s but like you, I will probably still be in the RRS in 12 months

Ive my tdv8 and just got all my suspension sorted and nice new 22" rims on its looking so good and drives tight as a tiger. I give it oil twice a year, keep LR parts only in it and give it diesel treatments each month. Its sitting at 125k now and drives amazing. I've no complaints and all my friends and family think I drive a 30k ride Wink So I'm not for changing and letting my heart keep me in this till the wheels fall off!

KEEP IT.
Just follow good maintenance, no fast revving early in the drive to it heats. Give her good fuel. Talk nicely to her.

Jame5, I drove an SDV6 too, and although its a great car, the engine tone and pull wasn't as exciting as the TDV8. The trouble we've all got with high mileage TDV8's is that the other RRS diesels aren't as exciting to drive and we'll have to part with £20k as well!!!

Designboy, interesting - my suspension lowers to access mode then raises again on its own - if that's what yours did, what was the cost of mending - was it a sensor? Also, what diesel treatment? Thumbs Up
