I got a letter about this the other day. I haven't contacted them yet.

They told me the removable tow bar is for occasional use only and should be removed when not used. If you use it for anything more than light loads then it can wear the locating section in the rear Xmember and become unsafe. I think what they are trying to do is circumnavigate any future claims that the tow bar has worn or damaged the rear of the chassis, which would be considerably more to replace than fitting a fixed unit.

It's basically down to crevice corrosion and abrasion from vibrations. You really must take it out and keep it greased, or if that is inconvenient, you probably require a fixed bar. Likewise, Stuart, if yours is rusted on then there is even more need to be concerned. You can buy a new lock and it will become clear how to remove it - theft is the other reason to remove them; with practice, it takes 5 minutes for some scumbag to pinch it... Thanks both, I'll take it off - after 5 years it might need a bit of a whack! |

my dad had the offer on his Disco4, but kicked off with them as he had paid a hell of a lot of money to have a LR OEM detachable towbar (which in hindsight he never removes ) and they wanted to put on a ugly fixed bar and offer no difference in cost back to him.
