OBD Port Lock

Aware that it's pretty easy to steal a RRS by sniffing the key to open the truck then plugging in to the OBD port and using it to program a new key, I've designed a lock for the port!

This is just a 3D Printed prototype - but it still seems to work. Cast in Aluminium or Stainless it could be pretty good. If someone removes it by force, it will likely break the port to the extent it will be hard to plug in to a computer. Either way, it buys time which is the worst enemy of thieves!

I just wondered if you collectively think there is a market for such a thing?

It certainly seems a better idea than this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00N8TY...ZFK5YBKCSR on it's own! Both together might be a plan though!

Note to Martin - This isn't an advert! Granted, until 2 years ago, I did own X-Eng but now I'm just an ordinary RRS owner! (just in case you wondered!)

IIRC, it's not as easy as you think... It's the keyless vehicles which are more of a concern, not the earlier keyed ones. Wink Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

You're right - but you can usually force the ignition barrel and then the only thing stopping it is the immobiliser built in to the key. Program the car to accept your key and youre away.

I still fear that, should such devices become commonplace, thieves will only too easily start to use an alternative location to program keys rather than the OBD port. Wink

When it comes to the pre-2010 vehicles, I'm also not sure, given that fact that they require a new factory programmed key, whether it is in fact possible to clone a key as it is with the later vehicles (where keys can be re-used). LR have also improved the issues with later vehicles in a software update. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Looks like a solution looking for a problem - as mentioned I didn't really think that theft of earlier models is such an issue as it is for current models - come up with something for it and you would be on a winner. Very Happy 07MY RRS TDV6

Based on the responses here and on a few other high end car forums, I don't think this is going to be a goer! They were a mixture of people not thinking it's a problem or not caring even if it is - which makes it a hard sell!

Back to the drawing board Wink
