V8 Top Up Oil

I was quite surprised to find my SVR is asking for 0.5 litres of oil so I consulted the manual and find the oil needed for the car (not just the SVR but all petrol engines) is quite an esoteric specification, SAE 0W-20.

I typically use Mobil One 0W-40 for my other cars but the availability of the 0W-20 oil - very low viscosity at higher temperatures - is quite limited. What'a clear is that the typical oil you will find at the likes of Halfords and your local filling station will not do. Even the choice of oils from specialists such as Opie Oils is very limited.

I believe there is some new Castrol oil which fits the bill but I have not seen it for sale.

I'm wondering whether the very low viscosity has more to do with fuel economy than with the specific lubrication requirements of the engine? I'm wondering too what oil others here are using for top-ups, or don't you care? Mark

I presume it is for economy. My cars run on Mobil 1, so I will probably end up using their Mobil 1 'Advanced Fuel Economy" stuff.

Yes, I can see there's a 0W-20 version of Mobil 1 which will be the one to go for, once I can find out where to get it. For my Porsches, Mercedes and Ferrari, the cooking 0W-40 grade seems to be fine. Only the SVR seems to especially fussy, at least as far as the manual is concerned. Clear though that you need to have some in stock because it's not generally available. Mark

For the money you've paid for the vehicle, I would expect the dealer to top it up for you for free if you pop in and ask. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Mark, if you recall the Diesel Evoques had a weird oil spec too and one that could only be bought with great difficulty from any discount or Halfords. Would be interesting to see what the dealership puts into it at service time if it is that rare an oil........... oh sceptical me! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Turns out the only oil which meets the spec is Castrol Edge Professional E 0W20 which is only available through dealers, not retail. My dealer wants £22/litre, about the same as Bombay Gin. Fortunately, I drink gin at a faster rate than the SVR does oil. Mark

When I got mine back from my service (service pack so £0) there was a a brand new bottle of oil in a nice cover/bag waiting for me if I needed to top up. The bag even has Velcro on to keep it in place. I keep it in the little cubby hole in the boot.

You should definitely ask 2014 MY RRS HSE Dynamic
