Holy member resurrection!! (07 TDV8 buying advice)

Well, hello everyone!

Not been around these parts for years!!

But.... been looking at a rather nice original (no bling) 07 TDV8, 100k miles, 1 owner, fsh, reasonably priced, will have new MOT.

So...would I be mad???

As mentioned, it has fsh (dealers and then specialists), has had compressor done, new tyres and rear bushes recently, etc etc... I know and trust the chap selling it, so lots of boxes are ticked.

But....its a high miles RRS and they're nothing but trouble, right??

All normal maintenance has been done and anything that needed doing has been done, but no specific gearbox flush, which I'm reading would be a good idea.

Seems to me the biggest risk is turbo failure - are there ever any indications this is imminent?

Anything else I should be looking for?

Thing is I wasnt in the market for a RRS, its just kind of come along as a "deal".... Confused Confused

Mine gave absolutely no indication they were about to fail. It was a few weeks after a service, though, so I have suspicions that someone messed up. But up until that point they were fine and then suddenly they weren't.

As for the rest, if it's been looked after properly with all services on time and to spec, then it's as good a bet as any other. A gearbox flush is probably a good idea. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Objectively speaking, it is a bl@@dy silly idea! There are more reliable, more economical choices out there. Thumbs Up

Very silly idea, unless you like drama and hassle. But, my TDV8 is without doubt the best car I have every owned and I never tire of driving it. You just need a good warranty and a bit of luck and it's a fantastic experience.

Talking of warranties....

From what I've seen the usual debates are Warranty Direct v Warrantywise, and how good they are. Seems a policy with them should be around £8-900/year, depending on what discount can be negotiated...?

In the past (with cheaper to maintain/repair cars!) I've used AA parts and labour cover, as an extension to basic membership. Cost of this is under £200/year I think (including breakdown cover), BUT its limited to 5 claims a year, MAX of £500 per claim.

I've just been wondering if its worth considering the AA route, backed up by putting aside a further amount each month, rather than WD, who may or may not try to wriggle out of a claim anyway..??

Any views?

That is exactly what I've done with the AA. I also self-insure and have a backup credit card if something catastrophic happens. Shocked Laughing I'm able to do a lot of jobs myself which helps a lot too.

I got quotes off both of those companies you mentioned and a couple of others but in the end I decided to swerve them all. You will find that WD will not insure your suspension at all nor the compressor given the age/mileage of your RRS. You should be able to get them to scrap the 'betterment' clause at the expense of a higher premium though.

Quite a few people on here have had successful claims with them though although I've read stories of the opposite being true too and indeed spotted a number of potential get-out clauses when I read through all the bumf.

Also, they stop covering cars at 120k miles anyway so depending on your annual mileage you will have to bite the bullet and go it alone soon regardless of what you decide now.

I will say it was a bit of an agonising decision to make and only time will tell if I made the right one! Rolling Eyes

Welcome Chrisbin! I bought my 07 TDV8 at 55k miles & now at 118k miles. No probs (tempting fate) apart from a battery, alternator & a couple of bearings. I've used Warranty Direct Secure Care at £850 p.a. which has covered all but battery. Yesterday I took out a new Warrenty Direct Secure Care policy for £900 p.a. which expires at 135k miles, when I will change the car. Betterment is excluded so I don't have to pay of a proportion of the parts & all but suspension & air con is covered. At present mileage the car stills looks & feels like a 50k mile car or less, but apart from muddy tracks/farm work now & then I look after it & it gets LR main agent servicing. The main reason I have a warranty is for the very reason that you never know when turbos may be an issue.... Wink

Thanks for all the responses chaps!

Great deal Sterling - nice negotiating!

Current state of play is that I am swaying against the idea....I feel it only fair to enlarge a bit, as you've all been so helpful!

I was planning to sell my Elise Crying or Very sad to raise some funds to be used elsewhere, not least to get something more practical to use every day. I was offered a pretty reasonable deal for it against the RRS already mentioned, and that got me thinking that since I needed transport it would be a bonus to have something "nice"...

However, having tried to convince myself its a good idea for the past 2 weeks, I am still very doubtful! The reality is that I could keep the Elise Thumbs Up and spend the cash needed for the RRS deal on a pretty reasonable "something", which would really make far more sense.....I think.... Confused Pondering a 2007......

Keep the Elise and buy something else. Sounds like the best of both worlds - more toys in the cupboard! Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
