Transmission Leak? Approximate Cost?

Afternnon,

Noticed a few "oil" patches on the drive, upon investigation it looks like a leak from the transmission box? Anyone give advise on how to resolve/approx costs (Non Stealer)?

I did have the car examined in my 2nd week of ownership, who stated that there was a "suspected leak," but nothing was showing at the time. I did contact the seller immediately with a few bits that were highlighted at the time, and he did pay for a new MAF for me. Do you think there is some part ownership from the dealer to contribute towards the repair, as it was highlighted just after purchase, or has that ship sailed? I purchased October 14 so still within first 6 months.

Help appreciated!

Do you have the dynamic anti-roll bars fitted? If so, check the leak isn't coming from the front one - the oil on the transfer box (which is the bit in your photos) might be just caught on it from a leak further forward. The dynamic bars are known to leak - not very often thankfully - but they can be an expensive fix.

When my rear bar leaked I thought I had a fuel leak such was the oil sprayed around under the rear/mid section of the car. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If you have the 2.7 v6 diesel engine it could be a leak from the electrical plug. Very common on the disco forum. Theres a replacement seal for it which is £8. Plug pops out, change seal and pop it back in. Identify where the leak it coming from first. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.

The main wiring loom to Mechatronic seal is common but it's a bit more than "Popping it out" you will need to drop the transmission sump, release the internal clip and then change the seal from the outside, be very careful as the electrical pins are easy to damage.

You should plan to replace the sump/filter pan and an oil change along with the new seal. Paul Redding

Took the car to a ger box specialist that I have used in the past on my previous BMW.

They have had a look and have diagnosed a small leak from the transmission box. He did say that it was only slight, and they did struggle to find it at first and had to give the underside a good clean to finally locate the leak. Im going to have it repaired, as whether the leak is minor or not, its a leak, and will only get worse over time, and ultimately could cost a lot more to fix long term. He wanted the car until Friday, but thats no good to me so he's topped up the oil and its going back in a week on Tuesday.

Ive been given the price of about £360 + VAT, which will come to £432. This is for replacement seal, oil replacement, etc etc. Does this price seem about right? Ive had a look online and cant really establish a price.

Advice appreciated! Thumbs Up 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

What seal?

Just had mine done, had a leak from megatronic electrical plug thing. The new seal was £8 from advance factors, 5 litres of gear oil used from John Craddocks at a cost of £54 then an hours labour at the garage at a cost of £30+vat.

It was my local garage, guys done a few before and services and lookeds after the Discos and RRS.

So for that problem it cost me less than £100. They drained the oil, took sump off, (was less than 12 months old so was putting original back on) Fitted new plug seal, everything back on and refilled the oil. The seal took 15 mins the re filling of the oil etc took longer as they did a procedure of runnig the car etc, getting oil up to temp blady bla.

Anyway all sorted for me.

The price will depend if they are replacing the sump, oil etc etc. Just a normal gearbox oil empty only gets rid of about 4-5 liters hence only that much needing to go back in.

Hope that helps. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.

Not 100% sure tbh, to access it the driveshaft is in the way and needs moving? I should have paid more attention really shouldn't I? I was busy going through numbers in my head! Embarassed 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Bear in mind that the item in the pictures appears to be the transfer box, not the gearbox itself. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

It's the transfer box and has several oil seals (input shaft from the gearbox, output shaft going to the front diff, output shaft to the rear diff). All of them require the transfer box to be removed from the vehicle, I believe, and some require the box opening up. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Sounds like that one then. Im guessing without knowing it would be hard to establish if my price was reasonable?

How many hours would it take to remove & re-fit the transfer box? 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Hi Darren,

I use a place called Weston Autocentre in Bridgtown just off the A5. A guy call Chris works on them. Theyve done my cars for years but I didn't realise he'd worked on these beasts before so now I know I've continued taking it there. They are reasonably priced. Recently had the big service their too with all belts including the back fuel pump. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.
