mmm interesting would this type of hardwiring work for a dash cam that i plan on installing soon, or would the cigarette type lead thats mostly supplied with these kits not be suitable |

Yes it is great for dash cams: very quick and clean. The cigarette lighter lead usually has the transformer to drop the voltage down to what the camera needs incorporated into the plug part. To hardwire you need a err.. hardwire kit which the camera supplier will sell you. If you know the voltage and current required a suitable transformer can be sourced directly from a chinese supplier via eBay for next to nothing (mine was less than £2). The transformer can be tucked away in the overhead console and secured with double sided tape.

I did purchase a hard wired kit, it came also with a cigarette plug thingy, but don't want to see wires. I have read all the post, but was just checking to see if there was any further info. I just want it to turn on & off when I get in & out. I've read bout the Black view ones which record when it's left but mine only moves at weekend and a couple of nights a week. Thanks for the info MY 13 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition

Yes if you wire it as per the linked guide the camera switches itself on when you u ock the car and switches off when you lock up. To answer Jimbg's question: the cigarette lighter plug in the systems I've seen incorporates the step down transformer from 12v to 5v so if you cut it off and wire in like that the camera would presumably be fried. Maybe some cameras use 12v but you would need to check the specification sheet. ? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE |

My hard wired kit, comes with a inline fuse and a little black box, before it goes to the camera, so I think you are correct Paddi MY 13 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition

Whoops!! I did not appreciate that it had a step down transformer, I assumed it was a straight 12 volt plug. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled 2022 HSE Dynamic P400e 2017 Discovery 3.0 HSE Silicon Silver Nimbus interior and a few extra toys SOLD 2013 HSE Black, Orkney Grey, Ebony Seats and Ivory Interior SOLD 2006 HSE Plus a few other cars inbetween! |

sounds like a result. All you need to do now is find your way around the million different settings on the camera and playback software? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I've did something very similar a few weeks ago - hard wired in a Dashcam and a Cheetah C150 speed camera detector. The Cheetah was 12v so I could just cut off the cigarette lighter part but the Dashcam was 5v. Instead of paying for a dedicated hardwire kit I just got a 12v-5v step-down transformer of eBay for a couple of quid and jobs a good'n.

I can't see my dash cam, when sat in drivers seat, so hopefully when it goes for servicing or cleaning, they won't see it either when they take it for a drive !!!!
