I would tend to agree but the new RRS is not massively cheaper after a year or two for that matter. Unless I am looking in the wrong place.

Be Interested to know anyone that took out a 2 year PCP deal when the new model came out what the GFV was quoted as and what they estimate the actual value to be? MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

Up until the end of last year LR dealers were proudly selling RRS which had done 10k miles and were 12 months old for the list price! When I asked how these cars were priced they told me to go for a new one and wait but if I wanted it there and then then the used example would be the one.

Things don't seem to be changing that much with the arrival of the new TDV6 dealers are again quoting 6 month lead times which will keep used values strong for some time to come IMHO.

As rigsby says I would love to know this too...

I also agree that usually you can save quite a lot by buying slightly used but that doesn't seem to be the case for RRS2 or even new FFRR to a certain extent still.

I bought my Sport at 8 months old with just under 5k miles at a very good price (IMO). Being the runout model, it has lots of toys as standard. Already being the old shape at purchase time also helped with low price. The higher price of RRS2 (new or used) is helping it hold its value better too.

I personally prefer buying used and avoiding the biggest depreciation hit. However, I can also understand why people buy new:
1. Specifying the car to their needs and preferences, get all the options they want.
2. You buy new, you know there isn't any history or usage style of previous owner(s) to worry about.
3. Some people just don't like the idea of owning something that had been used by others in the past.
4. In the rare situation like RRS2 now, old and new prices are the same so why not wait for a brand new car with full warrantty?

Win-win situation: they get to drive a brand new car tailored to their requirements and I save some money Very Happy Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

That's obviously a given DRDILL. I assume the OP's question is comparing thoughts of people who can afford to buy new and do it versus those who can but prefer not to. It would be pointless otherwise. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

i cant afford a new car but on every car ive bought for the last 5 years ive had a budget to spend of usually 2/3 times more than ive spent, eg when i bought my sport 15k, i had a budget of 35k, but 35k got the same car but newer so just didnt bother thinking that 20k was alot of repairs covered,

I dont think its obvious at all, in reality its a question with a multitude of answers, not everyone can afford new but if you wirk it out on paper running costs of say a 2 year old against a new one and then throw in depreciation it could be better to buy new.
I think with the service plan that most new buyers get thrown in for free, it changes things

I bought mine used...with the service plan which is transferable (apparently)..but it was close to retail price and had done 4k miles..! 2014.5 Mariana Black 5.0 Supercharged V8 Autobiography

I bought my previous sport 6 months old and saved £7k off new price - I bought my current rrs new and saved £6500 Confused

However last week I was offered £17k less than I paid in px which amounts to an incredible £23500 depreciationon off new price since July 2013 Shocked

From where I stand prices are not doing well against the inflated price of new model Sad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Ok, try this one, see what a dealer will offer you for a low mileage 12 month old RRS2. It will either be, the wrong colour, wrong spec, or the wrong time of year Shocked Those will be the excuses you will hear when he offers you a ridiculous low px price for your RRS2. Whistle

Just bought a massively spec'd 96K motor for less than 80K with less than 6000 miles, not even broken in, so massive saving was had in my eyes, fully 5 yr servicing transferred, remained of OEM warranty, 2yrs roadside assist etc, and lots more benefits.

No reason to by a new one... Shocked None currently

I'm now thinking at £2k depreciation per month I would of been better leasing Evil or Very Mad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

I bought mine at just under 2 yrs old and kept for 12 months. Was patient with dealers (8 weeks) in finding the Spec an colour at the price I wanted to pay. (no different in time waiting for a new customer build)

Delta between Buying and selling price was just under £6k (+£360 for two new tyres, at time of sale it needed taxing and a service)

It was a lot of car for just £500/Month depreciation.

Looking at new, I couldn't justify the depreciation pain in owning for a year.

Assuming that you have the money to buy new and you wonder if it is possible to own a new car for less cost than used - well it all depends what you sell for, something often overlooked when you buy.

If depreciation was always the same annual percentage drop for all makes and ages of car it would be simple - the cheaper the car, the less the depreciation. But it's not the same and as the guys have said, a well bought early RRS2 looked like a good bet due to shortage of supply if sold after 12 to 18 months and so it turned out. A 3yr old £35K RRS probably lost more in the same period - and may have needed repairs, new tyres and servicing to boot.

Of course, you are taking a punt, but with good odds.

I wish I'd been smart enough to do it!!! 2011 TDV6 HSE Stornoway grey, ivory trim

Life's too short to drive an ugly car.
