Whining and slight vibration

Hi all, i'm new here and in need of help.

I have a 2005 RRS HSE 2.7, and when driving after letting of the throttle and the car starts to decelerate and engine brake there is a whining sound and slight vibrations through the steering wheel and pedals, i'm almost certain that this is transmission issues but i'm unsure on what part, ive noticed its either worse or better on different road surfaces too. I'm assuming it would be out of a front prop, diff or drive shafts.

Ive had both front wheel bearings and hubs changed as the sound did sound like a wheel bearing being broke up but this didn't fix the problem.

any help would be great !

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

As you say it could be one of several things but the combination of whining and vibration suggests front differential perhaps? When mine went the vibration was most evident slowing down from high speed and felt/sounded similar to a flat tyre noise.

There are two well known causes of differential failure: the differential breather pipe has a filter at the top which collapses causing the differential to pressurise as it heats up and force the oil out at the seals. No oil means premature wear (obviously).

The second is a coating applied to the inside of the differential dissolves in the oil contaminating it and causing premature wear.

In both cases the only fix is a rebuilt diff. As you are in Bristol why not give Bristol Transmissions a call? - they seem to know their stuff.

The breather pipe filter is a simple DIY fix and should be done regardless as it will protect the rebuilt diff or possibly save the one you already have if it is not faulty. See here for details: http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/post377031.html#377031

Good luck and don't forget to post up the outcome for the benefit of others Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah thats what i was thinking, i was kinda hoping it would'nt be the diff, as i know its going to be expensive Sad.

Do you know if its a body off job to remove the front diff to have it referbed or isit a little easier than that?

I think i'll take it to my local specialist and get there final say to it being the front diff, if so have it rebuilt with the updated pipe and change the oil more regularly because of the paint, or would they use an updated casing or would the paint have worn completely off.

Thanks again for the reply i will keep updating as i go through the process of getting it repaired Smile

No need to lift the body to replace the diff but not an easy DIY. Rebuilt diffs are about a bag of sand exchange from Land Rover but some specialists can rebuild them for less. Good point about residual coating. I had an LR rebuilt one installed and trusted they would have dealt with the coating somehow.

Best of luck - hope you get it diagnosed and sorted out Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Its a realef to know the its not a body off job lol. I should be able to get it rebuilt by someone i know, if it is the diff thats the problem.

I would hope that the coating would have fully 'corroded' off, but will ask if he could have a good look inside before hand or change the oil more regularly.
Once rebuilt and back in the motor, update the breather pipe also Smile.

Thanks, will keep it updated how i get on!
