uneven rear brake disc wear with pics

Anyone had this happen to their discs, started off as as a squeak now a scrape.
Its the rear drivers side disc on a 2008 TDV8.

I have not worn the pads to the metal, so its a mystery.

I'm going to replace all 4 with drilled BREMBO discs, who does a full set of discs with pads?.
Anyone have experience with the full BREMO disc/pad set up.

Also mine has the BREMBO calipers upfront does this setup use the same size discs as a non BREMBO calipered vehicle.

Sticky caliper

I had it on my MY07. Replaced rear discs/pads and 15k miles later, pad started squeaking, especially in reverse. Then light comes on and grinding from O/S/R disc. Fortunately I was on my way to AJS for some tyres, so jacked the car up and they inspected. Sure enough, sticky caliper which they eased off/cleaned and gave me some new pads. They said that they'd had quite a few of them.

I've not used Brembo drilled discs but I got some grooved fronts, with suitable Brembo style pads (Ferrodo I think) from www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk who make performance discs. Fitted them myself, which was a simple job and they are an improvement over the OE ones. Rears I kept with OE.

When you say it was a sticky caliper, was it the caliper piston that was seized.

If I'm reading this correctly then the OP is saying that the pads are not evenly worn in that there are dirty great grooves at the outer and inner edges. The pictures certainly look that way.

My guess is that in the past the discs had worn heavily with large lip on the outer and inner edge of the swept area and someone scrimped a few pounds on servicing by only changing the pads (possibly more than once). So the disc now has very large lips. Looks too far gone to resurface with a lathe so new discs all round are needed.

The front discs on Brembo equipped vehicles are larger than the non-Brembo.

Not everyone who has fitted drilled discs has had a happy experience - quite a few post about vibration problems appearing. You would need some reassurance that the non-standard discs were very high quality as there does seem to be some rubbish out there. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The caliper piston was partially seized in that it was not releasing fully, which allowed pressure to remain on one side, which caused the extra wear to the pad as it was constantly rubbing. The outside pad was worn more than the inner one, although that had still worn more than in comparison to the other rear brake's pads. The wear was also more pronounced near the center of the disc than the outer - that's where the pad wore through to the metal - and I would have said approx 2mm of pad at the outer edge left compared to minus at the inner.

I can't recall whether the shape of the pad was similar to what you are describing, but it was definitely squealing under breaking. This squealing was louder when reversing and without breaking.

OK, found the source of the noise. Seems that the brake shoe pin clip has disintergrated letting the shoe scrape against the disc inner.
its also worn the "cross strut and spring" I'm a bit worried cos I cannot see said cross strut and spring available anywhere online.
Gotta wait till monday now to get one from the dealer. Evil or Very Mad

So good news and bad news then really?

My new handbrake shoes can with new hold down clips but think I had to re-use the pins. You can probably find new pins at a decent motor factors (or Halfords) as they seem like generic parts.

The shoes came with new springs but not the one for the spreader plate or a new spreader plate. So yes looks like you have to hope it is available from Land Rover.

When reassembling follow Bodsy's Brake Bible to the letter and get everything lubed and adjusted properly or there will be problems later. Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Advanced factors will send you a set out. Possibly even has that spring, but not sure as its a funny one. But they have the rest. Thumbs Up
Halfords are very very unlikely to have these. You'll almost certainly have to order them.
Advanced also do various disks at decent prices including a v8 upgRade kit. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

Cable ties are to hold the springs back, to make the plates easier to fit Thumbs Up

well nobody has these in, all "have to order them".
only needed the poxy anti-rattle spring.
hopefully they be at the dealers tommorow.

.

the brake shoe holding pins and clips on the other side don't look like they are far away from disintergrating.
maybe they could have used stainless here

They cant use Stainless, ISTR because they don't have the strength to keep in place.
But I always at least have a set of those pins to hand when I take my disks off, just in case.

If you order a Pro Service kit for brakes from Advanced factors for the rear, then you get those pins and clips with it. You don't get that spring for the metal separator though, that's a LR specific part. Ive never had to change mine, but then again, my disks come off usually twice a year for a clean out and re-lubricate the contact points. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

I know stainless bolts are not high tensile.
Its interesting to see motorcycle stainless bolt kits on eBay to replace the steel bolts used by the manufacturer, not realising that these steel bolts are a high tensile grade.
just what you need on your brake disk &caliper.
But these pins are not really under much tension, I wouldn't have thought.
