FBH remaining on

Question about the FBH. I've noticed fuel economy decreases a fair bit in Winter, and I wondered if the FBH was the culprit. I understand the FBH firing up below 4c, but I assumed that once the engine temp was up the FBH would stop? Yesterday I drove for over 100 miles, temp 2c, but my FBH was still operating at the end of the journey.....surely this is not right?

Mine does the same. I thought it should have switched itself off once the engine was up to normal temperature. I'm in the shed, I'll be back in the real world in a minute.

Hello Tony.

Itīs aboslututely right. Thumbs Up

The FBH:s job is to help Your dieselengine, which is a
not so effective heatingplant, since almost all the energy
in the diesel becomes Torque..

Compared to an Gasoline engine where almost half the energy
becomes heat..

So the FBH assists the engine in maintaining a temperature
at approx 75C, and when the temp is in that region, the FBH
goes into a lower setting, almost "idling", and when needed
it goes "full tilt" again.

So there seems to be nothing wrong with Your FBH, sir.. Thumbs Up

Best regards

Economy has probably decreased due to the winter diesel. This can make a reasonable difference to your mpg.

Hi guys.

At full power (5kW) the FBH consumes 0,6l/h
At partial load, 0,35l/h

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Bali Blue

Hi Ufffe
Do you know if the fbh will operate if the car is left unlocked, engine not running and temp below the required 5 deg. It's only that I had issues with mine the other day whereby the battery ran flat overnight after being perfect the day before. I'm sure I heard the fbh running before I tried to start it.
Car had been garaged and unlocked during the night. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!

The FBH shouldn't run without the engine running unless you have the timed system or something like BAS's remote controller. I would expect the garage would be very unpleasant to walk in to if the FBH had been running for a while.

It's possible your FBH has a fault and the fan is running constantly - it sometimes does run on a bit at shut down to cool the burner unit but not for very long. Pull the FBH's fuse and see what happens to the battery overnight. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I see, as you said if the fbh had been running there would have been a rather unpleasant smell, but there was definitely something running, it could well have been the fan that you mentioned.
Where exactly is this located, is it part of the heater unit and not something you can actually get your fingers on.
This has only happened the once, al has been okay since the other day.

The fan is part of the FBH I think. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
