Thatcham Advice re: Theft without keys

http://www.thatcham.org/files/pdf/Theft_Without_Keys.pdf

Quote:

i. Park your car in an area with monitored CCTV or in a manned car park. If you have a garage,
then use it. If none of these are an option then park in a well-lit area.

ii. Add a device to physically immobilise the car like a Thatcham approved wheel clamp or a
steering wheel lock. Any physical device like this will act as a very visible deterrent and given the
additional time and effort that will be needed to overcome these devices will make would
thieves think twice about targeting your vehicle. These devices are relatively inexpensive.

iii. Once the criminals have managed to programme their own key then all of the vehicle’s in built
security is down. You may therefore wish to install an additional, aftermarket Thatcham
approved alarm or electronic immobiliser which can scare away the criminals or prevent them
from driving the car away even if they have the key. To ensure the reliability of the installation
always use a Thatcham Recognised Installer.

iv. You may also consider a Thatcham Category 5 or Category 6 vehicle tracking and recovery
system. Whilst it may not prevent the initial theft, with an average recovery time of 2 hours it
will certainly ensure you get your vehicle back as quickly as possible. Other Tracking systems to
lower Category standards can also be effective at aiding vehicle recovery.

v. Refer to http://www.thatcham.org/files/pdf/compliance.pdf for a full listing of Thatcham compliant security devices

A colleague had just had his RRS stolen! The Police thought that the close proximity of the key fob inside his house to his car on the drive meant all anyone had to do was touch the door handle and the car would open! After that, just touch the Start button and off it went!

Is it possible to disable the Keyless entry and does an OBD protector lock really work?

Think is about time jaguar/land rover stepped up there game and sort this issue out. Why should anyone pay for extra security after forking out 30k plus.

How close is the car to the house Shocked mine will not unlock unless i am within 3 ft of the door, i would virtually have to park mine in the house for that to happen. Also, if i start the car then get out, immediatley the "smart key not found " alarm comes up on the dash.
I find the police's explanation a bit hard to swallow 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!

^^^ +1 on the proximity theory from the police being far-fetched unless the car was parked right next to the door/wall that the key was hanging on the other side of Rolling Eyes It doesn't work unless the key is really really close to the car.

The key not found warning comes up in this case but doesn't stop the car from being driven. I specifically tested that by leaving the key on my driveway, driving a 100 or so yards and coming back. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Yes, it's rubbish. As said, you have to be quite close to open the doors and basically the fob must be inside the car to start it!

Yes, forgot that bit Embarassed You can drive it away without the key but you have to start it with the (original or cloned) key inside the car first. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Got to love Thatcham.... Buy a £80000 RRS, then buy further Thatcham devices to make it safe.

Mind you, it's better than L/R high tech suggestion below!!

I'd be quite happy going back to using a key to start the engine.
The distance between the little shelf by the door where I put my key and a car is probably two meters max.....so I wonder what the range is.
However I think this is an easy test for all owners to do. If you leave your key where you normally leave it, could you start your engine?

RRS will not start unless key is inside vehicle Thumbs Up

Range to doors when unlocking is about 1m - if swmbo gets to car before me she can't open door until I'm within approx 1m of door handle Very Happy Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

JLR should make keyless entry an option. Personally, I still prefer using the key to start the car. 2008 TDV8, Java Black, Ebony Sports Seats, Side Steps, Zebrano, Privacy Glass, Premium ICE, Hybrid TV.

We can't go back to using keys because keyless transportation is how it ALL started. Horses, for example. Rolling Eyes L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!
