Battery drains when car left unlocked

Last week, my RRS HSE 2011 refused to start as the battery was flat which I thought was a little odd as my car is always garaged and is left unlocked.

I called the breakdown company who jump-started the car, and after leaving it running for a couple of hours, it has been fine for the past week. Been using the car all day without an issue, got home and left the car switched-off and unlocked on my drive for five minutes and when I returned to park it in the garage, it wouldn't start.

It appears as if when I lock the car, the car always starts again, but when I leave it unlocked, it drains super quick which clearly shouldn't be the case. Obviously the car will need to go back to the dealer, but any idea what the issue will be?

The battery shouldn't drain that quickly.

Any ideas? 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE

If you leave it unlocked then it'll never go to sleep. If it stays awake then it uses lots of battery juice. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

That's how mine used to be, although not as long as a week. Car is only three and a half years old, so I'd expect a battery to last a little longer than that. Always owned Jaguars before switching to Range Rover, and typically a battery would last around six years. 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE

Just spoken to my dealer, who stated that when the battery in the RRS gets low, the car never recharges it fully - just maintains it at the same level. He reckons it's unlikely that the battery should fail after three years, so suggested putting it on a trickle charge overnight with a very low amp battery charger, and see if that sorts out the problem.

He also suggested that I always lock the car when its garaged, so as the car can 'go to sleep'.

Your dealer is correct Thumbs Up

This is a "feature" of the smart charging system on the 3.0 engines.

Latest update...

Drove over to see a different dealer this morning, who ran a diagnostic on my battery which reported that the battery needs replacing at a cost of £317!!!

In two minds now... Buy a trickle feed battery charger and see if that does the trick, or bite the bullet and buy a new battery. Apparently the new battery is an AGM battery (?) which is more reliable, but given the fact that the car is only three and a half years old, I'm tempted to call Land Rover on Monday to complain.

Ideas on a postcard please...

Thanks for all of the advice so far to date. 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE

Whilst a battery, if the car is used normally, should last longer than 3.5 years, I doubt that any car dealer or manufacturer would do anything other that laugh at the thought that they should in some way contribute towards a replacement since they cannot know whether the battery has been mistreated or not.

Well, my faith in human kind has been restored!

Spoke with the customer relations department at Land Rover this morning, and under the circumstances, they have agreed to replace the battery FOC. Must admit that their professionalism and attention to detail was simply superb, so well done Land Rover, and thank you! 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE
