I always do this as I can't be bothered to get key out of my pocket. I also reverse against walls when possible and have blackvue on when parked to cover front of vehicle - so much to think about Laughing Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

A lot of these vehicles aren't locked when they are stolen though, thats the problem, you think you have locked it, but as you know, they are intercepting the signal when you press the remote to lock the vehicle. These vehicles are secure (sort of) when locked. Otherwise they have to be broken into to gain access to the OBC. Wink Care should be taken to lock the vehicle with the door button, and NOT the remote. Banging Head

And make sure it is double locked.

Perhaps those of us who care about Land Rover patching their software to prevent such easy key cloning should all call them on 0370 5000500 and tell them how concerned we are. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!

Yeah we should all call them and blame them for the stupid EU rules that prohibit them and all car manufacturers from blocking the OBD port! Or the fact that they have to share all of their information with dodgy backstreet garages who for all you know could have cloned your key during a service because again, EU rules state car manufacturers have to share this information and are not allowed to exclusively have access to such things as the OBD port.

Manufacturers are in a no win situation. The police are doing a crap job at catching people and the EU are making it extremely difficult for them to put safeguards on vehicles.

BUT as an owner, WE are not bound by the same EU rules and can disable our OBD ports just like we can fit steering locks, wheel clamps or any other device to stop the exploits that theives use. I've found a few companies who will do OBD modifications to allow it to be de-activated and reactivated. Like I said, the manufacturers hands are tied tho and they can't put in a way to deactivate it without telling people how to reactivate it otherwise... You guessed it... The EU are on their case.

So our 3 step plan of action is:

1). Buy a security underground parking space and take it everywhere we go, or, buy a Stoplock, or monkey around with our OBD port
2). Vote UKIP
3). Send Land Rover a Christmas card with a letter of apology for blaming them

Well, BMW, Audi and LR got a good spanking. We can but hope that LR will stop denying there's a problem and sort it out. The Beeb programmed the key for the Evoque in 10 seconds... Mark

And BMW within 30 seconds and they promised over 2 years ago on watchdog that they were contacting every customer and had a fix to the problem....

The main thing that any normal person would have taken from the program is that it is all keyless cars of all makes and models are suffering security exploits because of EU rules preventing the makers from closing off the ODB port and making them share all the information on how to access it.

As a former BMW owner (got stolen ironically) I can assure you that I can put a link up showing them doing it in approximately 20 seconds, but like the program, that's with the door open. Can show you them opening the door without force in just over 1 minute too.

What worries me more is when are watchdog going to have a show telling everyone when I'm on holiday and where the weak point in my home security is and the advertise it so all the scumbag criminals know? How many of them have searched for the devices used on the cars following tonight's show? I found then ready to order in just a few minutes. Well done watchdog Whistle

I don't think watchdog are helping the crims.. they're already many steps ahead of watchdog, hence all the motors already going missing. It seemed not too long ago (and it's still a recurring issue) that in the West Midlands area especially, that Focus RSes were going missing almost nightly and sometimes 2-3 per night using the same methods (keyless entry as standard).

The fault lies with the EU regulations IMO with ordering that all the codes need to be stored on the ECU.. but it's also one of those things, there's always someone out there who will find a way to break something, no matter what, and for various different reasons, and like has already been stated (I think), cars have been being nicked for years.. I remember back when a hair clip was all that was needed to nick a Ford Escort (my Dad had one that the key was so worn, you could remove it from the ignition barrel with the engine still started.. so obviously not much more complicated to start it with something less than a good condition key).. or people went armed with a slimjim and a pair of pliers.. now they use electronic gadgets.

Back in the day, you worried about being whacked over the head for your wallet... now they send you a malware laiden email.. it's simply evolution. If you can gain legitimate access to something, someone else will be able to gain illegitimate access to it too, we just have to make it as difficult as possible for them (eg: a disklog as a visual deterrent as one example).

Cheers..

Ian

A friend who owns an audi rang the helpline number given on watchdog to be told there's nothing they can do, that all manufacturers use the same basic system and it's the owners responsibility to take steps to secure their vehicle - so much for them working to resolve the problem Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
