United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HST Java Black

New engine from JLR, £6200. OEM Turbos £850 each.
I did look at companies doing rebuilds and remanufactures, however JLR informed me you can't buy a piston or head, they would only supply the entire unit. So the concern was, if JLR can't provide them, where do these companies source the parts from.
I found one company doing a rebuild for £3500-4000, so i figured, it was better to spend £6k for a new engine and hopefully have no further issues.

I would like to know how many others have had a failed engine due to an internal part breaking.

You won't get that answer as LR will keep the core unit and never reveal the cause of the failure. I asked, demanded and even got my Solicitor to write to them but answer was damaged beyond identification of cause.
To date I recall failures in the 20's for V8 and higher for oil pump fractures on V6. The number of turbo failures reported on this forum alone for V8 is frightening but its confined to Sports. Fullfats with the same engine don't suffer the same failures or volume of reports. Very strange..... Rolling Eyes
As already told, my total build bill was in excess of 16 grand, with 7 pages of parts including three turbos, complete engine, induction system, pumps and belts, body off labour. Took five months from failure to return only to be returned the next day with a rattle which eventually turned out to be torque converter not done up but I lost faith in the dealer before that and binned the car. Add the accumulated damage to bumpers and bodywork while sat in dealers yard and the oily bits in the boot which trashed load liner and carpet and a picture is painted. Whistle 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

If you peruse the FFRR forum, you will find turbo failure is just as common.

Just finished a pair of turbo's on an FF.

Actual cause of failure was "lack of oil" as diagnosed by a turbo specialist (req for warranty claim)

Upon replacing the oil feed pipe, it was found to be mostly blocked. It may be worth replacing said feed pipe every few years, as part of routine servicing...

Thanks for the information DM.

That observation is consistent with advice on various turbo specialist websites that blockage/internal collapse of the oil feed pipes is common. How difficult is to change the pipe? Is it a possible DIY or a body-off job?

I'd like that done asap. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Which leads to various other questions such as are LR using the correct oil when servicing vehicles. Ford had this issue with CVH engines when I worked for them and head/engine replacements were common at low milage. They ended up changing oil specs at dealers to prevent Black Death in engines.
At DM, I don't read the FF forums, the quality of majority of posts seems to be a weeing contest on wallet/gentleman veg size Rolling with laughter 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Not looked at a TDV8 Sport since, but the FF is fairly straight forward. A bit fiddly mind, but what job isnt Laughing

Will bear it in mind next time I have one in my hands, unless someone local to me has a TDV8 we can inspect sooner Thumbs Up

Top man - pity you are so far away

Looks like there are quite a few oil pipes that could be replaced - do you think all of them should be changed or is it only some of them that cause problems?

Think I read somewhere it is usually the oil pipes that draw oil away from the turbo that clog and or collapse - not the pipes that feed it; then pressure builds up in the turbo and that's when the seals blow?

In this case, it was the feed pipe that was blocked, No 4 on the picture

Definitely restricting the oil flow to both turbos

My TDV8 has been at the dealer since last Wednesday (hopefully picking it up tomorrow) with a blown turbo - the second time in three months. I advised them to at least clean out the oil pipes. My guess is that they won't have done so, of course. I expect another turbo to blow again in the next couple of months... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
