United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey
Another day, another issue

Pulling away from traffic lights to get on the M4 at Reading today, there was a distinct lack of "go". Then I noticed a whistling sound under load. By now I was on the M4 so, as there were no warning lights on the dash and no smoke from the rear, I gently pottered along to the next junction. Guessed it might be a turbo hose so pulled in to the services at Chieveley. Checked the top hoses but no obvious issue. No whistle at idle but when revs applied in neutral it was obvious. Phoned LR Assist who attended within the hour (in a new Transit van as they've now dropped the Disco 4).

Technician says "ah, a TDV8, I know what that'll be then" and checked the top hoses! I told him I'd done that already and he did his best to look at the lower ones. Managed to see the RH one had some oil where hose meets turbo. He reckons that oil from the previous blow up (back in August when both turbos had to be replaced) had trickled back down the hose from somewhere and had lubricated the hose. This, together with it possibly not being properly tightened when fitted, has led to it popping off the turbo he thinks. Sounds plausible. We'll see.

He advised it was engine-safe to drive it to the dealership at Oxford - I could wait for a flat bed but he advised that would be 2+ hours and by then the garage would be shut. He arranged for an Enterprise car to be dropped off at the garage for me - by telling his office it was an urgent need and the Enterprise office is only 5 minutes from the dealership anyway. Drove up to the garage - using ACC as he suggested to just gently accelerate as required rather than giving it lots of right pedal. Hire car was a little late so enjoyed a "free" coffee and a look around the demo vehicles - again. Apparently the Disco Sport looks better in the flesh than pictures and has loads of space in it - much more than the RRS2 according to the v. pleasant sales lady. Might pop in for a look at the end of January. Apparently, if I order now i can have one in March/April but if I wait until Jan/Feb then it'll probably be 6+ months after that. I said I'd wait to see how reliable it is before deciding...

Vehicle is under LR Extended warranty so we'll see what the outcome is. Either way, it's either something that's gone pop or something the garage did last time has come undone so I'm loathe to be putting my hand in my pocket for any of it. Here we go again...

If I replace it, and I don't want to as it's fabulous when it's working, what would I get? Censored if I know.

Anyway, excellent service by LR Assist again - well done to them.

Oh, and services seem to be charging for parking over 2 hours these days (using plate recognition cameras at the entrance with automatic billing if you don't pay). If you're there because of a Land Rover "feature", sorry breakdown, then you can give your name and car details etc. to a shop (I went in to the WHSmiths) and then you don't have to pay. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Crikey! I will definitely be looking at extended warranty now!

The Disco Sport is apparently smaller on the outside than the freelander, but seems to have loads of space inside. Unlike the RRS2 which has less usable space from the rear seats back!
If reliability is as good as the Freely2 , and there is no need to doubt that, then it should be good. I'd like to see if the RRS2 comes back in SE form though , once sales slow down (not likely as our dealer can't get enough!)

Cheers

I absolutely wouldn't consider running my RRS without a warranty - that's one thing that's worrying me as LR's warranty is not available once the vehicle exceeds 100k miles (mine's on 82k now and I'm going to be doing 2.5k / month for the next few months...at least until Christmas, anyway, maybe until April if the contract is extended. The warranty is due in August so next year might be the last year of LR warranty - if I'm lucky enough to get it that far before 100k comes up (which is obviously unlikely if I'm still doing this mileage in the new year)).

I've been given a FL2 SD4 HSE by Enterprise. It's a nice enough vehicle but I did miss my RRS on the drive home in crap conditions in heavy traffic.

I'm still taken with the idea of a D4 to replace the RRS - the space in the back is tempting and it has that big luxury 4x4 feel that I like from the RRS. Maybe a better option would be the DS when it finally comes out in Ingenium spec. I'll have to roll the figures and see. Otherwise I might leave LR and go for a Touareg (to get the tow capacity, although the DS with tow pack would just pull our horse trailer (although not legally at the trailer's gross weight which is about 2550kg so 50kg over the DS's tow limit)). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

If the DS was air sprung with a smooth V6 it would be a no brainer, the RRS on our roads just floats along! Mine tows just one horse, so probably wouldn't get close to the 2.5 ton limit anyways.
There is something about the Big Disco that I just can't fathom, it's a bigger car yet getting in and out is more awkward than the RRS, I have to duck and contort myself, whereas in mine I just swivel round! I prefer the high transmission tunnel as well, making you feel cocooned!
Cheers

RRSTDV8 - I hope you get your RRS sorted soonest, a bit worrying to hear of your problems, but on the brighter side LR assistance seem to be providing a decent service. Glad I will have the two year extended Approved LR warranty with the roadside assist, but hope I don't have to use it.

Do you always get another LR provided by Enterprise when you are provided one on the back of LR Assist?

There's no guarantee that you'll get a LR according to the small print. Both times I've used Assist, however, I have had LR. FL2 this time and an Evoque previously. Enterprise offered me either the FL2 or a Landcruiser as both were at the dealership following other Assist calls out(!). I decided to take the FL2 for no other reason than familiarity having had them as loan cars when in for a service.

The FL2 really needs revving, compared to the RRS, when accelerating on the dual carriageway etc. I missed the big torque of the TDV8 this morning... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Hopefully it won't require another turbo as mine did. The induction system should have been cleaned out during rebuild so no excuse for this and all previous parts and labour are covered by LR 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

hi all.I've had my V8 rrs now for about 4 months and it has started to whistle from 1500 to 2500 RPM's.In my work I go to lots of garages & I often ask about the turbo whistle on cars.some say its normal most turbo's do,don't worry about it.I've had an indy look at it & they said it's not that bad ,they wouldn't do anything.had it serviced at main dealer ,they say it's not that loud.I have got a warranty but I'm guessing they won't do anything till it goes bang.with all that's said on here I'm getting paranoid about driving it.it's a 58 plate with 56000 on it.any advice would be appreciated.I've replaced discs &pads all round.front upper &lower wishbones ,anti roll bar bush's &brackets. It had new rear bar under warranty as was leaking when I bought it , so I've spent a fair bit on her already.Like most people I love driving her .thanks for any replies.p

You shouldn't really hear the whistle normally. If it's pulling nicely when you press the throttle then you might just have a slightly noisy one - or your hearing is better than average. With mine, the whistle was accompanied by a noticeable lack of performance - although no warning lights / error messages on the dash. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Just drive it and enjoy it. Let it warm up properly before putting your foot down, usually around 8 mile in mine, and after a run especially if the turbo has been put to good use, let it cool down, ie tick over for approx 2 minutes before switching the engine off. Thumbs Up

When i had an Mitsubishi L200 that too devoloped a turbo whistle, but no lack of performance, Mitsubishi replaced the turbo and sent the old one away for testing and the report came back, no fault. They eventually put the whistling turbo down to the fact that i had the factory power upgrade on my vechicle as the new turbo started whistling too. How much boost is your spot running RRSTDV8 ? Possibly too much??

My L200 now has 120000 on the clock, has been used and abused and apart from routine maintainance has never required major surgery apart from a broken balance belt. It doesn't whistle, use oil and starts first turn of the key even when left parked for months. Thumbs Up
It was purchased as a standby when Sport was continually failing and very few loan cars had towing electrics. Rolling Eyes 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

I must admit, mine was abused from new right up to when i sold it with 45000 miles on it. Other than the turbo issue, it never missed a beat, but there has been quite a few that have thrown rods through the block. Has yours got the power upgrade Simon?

Sorry RRSTDV8. we are drifting Off Topic Wink

What is a power upgrade please? I'm not sure that I would want this if it could possibly affect the ability of the engine to contain itself but I am curious.

Box of tricks that boosts fuel and turbo boost. Takes a 155 bhp L200 to about 180.
Mine is bog standard, tows regularly, hence balance belt failure and goes off road through the fields daily Bow down Only failures I havd heard about are belts, siezed balance shafts and cracked Pistons
