painting my Brembos and drums

so, needing to refresh the look of my Brembos, and prevent the drums of my new Brembo discs from going (even more) rusty, I've embarked upon a new project. This is what they looked like earlier today:

These needed a good clean and de-greasing, so I started with WD40 to loosen the rust, then a combo of white spirit, a cloth, a green scourer and wire wool. In total I cleaned the calipers and drums three times. I took out the brake pads before the cleaning process. I also went over the areas to be sprayed with a 600 wet and dry paper.

Post clean:

I blanked off those areas that I don't want sprayed with tape and newspaper.

I've always wanted the matt black look for my calipers, so I went with a heat resistant spray from Hammerite, the "High Heat Paint" aerosol. This doesn't need a primer. I waited for everything to dry and sprayed a light layer, which I'm currently letting dry before adding to it.

After the first layer:

I haven't got a clue how this will end up, both in terms of final colour and durability, but time will tell. I'll post more photos when the last layer is on, the new stickers are on, and the wheel is back in place. Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.
DONE: Meduza front bumper, AB rear bumper, AB tailpipes, calipers repainted, rear upper tailgate upgrade, side steps, AB front grille, AB side vents, rear LED lights, clear side repeaters, integrated daytime running lights, LED headlights.
TO DO: color code sills and pillars.

ok so here is the end result with the stickers on. they're in fact better irl than on the photo:

the only thing i'm thinking of is the lacquer. I'm wondering if it will need a lacquer because apparently the finish as it is now is very hard (once cured). If I do go for a lacquer then it would have to be matt lacquer (a regular one would of course defeat the object), just to give me a finish that's probably easier to clean.

I'm gonna let the spray cure a little longer before I pop the wheel back on. I'm not using the car this week so it'll be given a weeks drying time, should be sufficient!

Looks good but I would like to see a shiny caliper and clear gloss over the sticker would protect it. Otherwise Thumbs Up

Why would you paint the drum? This isn't a criticism, I would like to know as my calipers are being sprayed red this week

The steel drums rust very quickly if they are not coated with any protection.

I agree with you there, I think a gloss would be optimal to protect everything. I'm gonna look on fleabay tomorrow for clear coat on matt paint. Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

Hi Andy, I've just mounted the wheel and I think the drum & caliper matt black combo looks amazing, though I'm not so sure about red being a great combo. I can't take a piccie right now as it's pitch black out, but I'll post one tomorrow morning for you to view. If I had red calipers, I would probably get the drum painted titanium silver so as to match the alloys.

Regardless, you should get the drum painted, rust is a horrid colour! Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

Peachy mate I've just put the wheel back on and no kidding, it's the dogs Censored ! 3+ hours spent on one side but it's worth it! They've turned out darker than the last piccie shows, I used the entire aerosol can on this offside section.

You're right it needs the clear coat! But I don't wanna lose the matt/stealth look. and it's gotta be a spray solution, can't stand using a brush Thumbs Up Exclamation Any ideas gladly send them my way Thumbs Up Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.
