Keyless entry security flaw

I was fortunate enough to drive my friends 2012 RRS recently in South Africa and Namibia on a 5000 km road trip. It was a joy to drive. However one afternoon i drove the car whilst in the Khalahari Transfrontier Park whilst my buddy was resting. The car started and I drove off assuming the "key" was in the car somewhere. It turned out it wasn't and he had it in his room the whole time. I hate to think what might have happened if I switched off the car during our afternoon drive. Should this have happened? Seems a serious security flaw?

Loved the adaptive cruise control by the way. Pretty scary at first but one you got used to - fantastic. RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE 2012 Santorini Black

Dealer picked mine up a few years ago for a service so I got it out of garage and brought it round front. In jumped LR driver and off he went. I then put my hand in pocket for front door key and pulled out smart key Thud

So I rings dealer and told them to get their guy on his mobile and tell him to turn around and come back for key. They ring him - he pulls over and turns off engine to answer phone Shocked

I told them I didn't need courtesy car so he had left his car here and taken key Rolling Eyes

Had to get a mate to take me to find him with key - always put key in cup holder now when they pick up - IMHO bit of a design flaw but then again it's a LR Laughing Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

That's a real flaw from JLR. I had keyless on my BMW and it would know if the key wasn't in the car and it would alert you both audibly and via the dashboard displays.

MY13 gives a warning when the engine is on but the key isn't in the car. Never tried driving off without the key though. Real big flaw if it warns but allows the car to be driven anyway Shocked

I've just tried mine - started with key and then got out and left key in garage. Jumped back in car and it bonged once and displayed message about smart key if I bothered to look as I closed the door but allowed me to drive away without key and message vanished Rolling Eyes

Perhaps it could be as persistent about key as it is about seat belt when I'm trying to hitch up a trailer or caravan Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Yup, just tried mine too. Started the car, left the key on my driveway and drove off. "Key not found" message disappeared but the red triangle light stayed on. Drove a 100 or so yards before returning home without any issues (except the warning light as mentioned). Not great from security as well as convenience point of view.
