Puncture!

Suffered a near side rear puncture today, luckily only discovered it when I came to drive home at the end of the day, so must have deflated over a few hours.

Changed the wheel and found that the inside edge of the tyre was down to the canvass! So was very lucky it didn't let go on the move Shocked

Drove home cautiously, and checked the inside edge of the off side rear, same situation! Shocked

These tyres were on the front previously and were getting low on tread anyway (though still legal in depth), but the inside edges have failed drastically in the c.6K miles they've done since being switched. I intend to be much more thorough when checking my tyre wear in the future!

I'll be ordering a full set of Pirellis to replace them Thumbs Up 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG

When was the last time you had a 4 wheel alignment carried out? It suggests either a camber issue or a severe toe issue.

What tyres are currently fitted? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Not sure of the date exactly but had the 4 wheel alignment done early 2013 I think. I expect I'll get it done again once the new tyres are on.

Could it be wear due to straddling speed bumps?
I know Honest John in the Saturday Telegraph often talks about how speed bumps that do not cover the full width of the road can cause invisible wear to the inside edge of car tyres. He claims there are several accidents every year because of this.
The recommendation is to drive alternately left side/right side and cross with the wheels in the middle of the bump.
I now do this whereas in my previous Discovery I would straddle the bump to minimise impact. This is tempting in a large vehicle but the very inner edge of the tyres can be damaged by chipped sides of speed bumps.
