But the cigarette lighter works....and I know the charger is fine as it charges the phone when plugged into rear socket.....any ideas?

Have you checked the fuse hasn't blown, ie, does the standard cigar lighter work?

Had this with rear lighter socket on mine when I Ran dual lead to Acc socket. Turned out that when I folded down rear seat, I pushed the plug in to socket. Took it to bits and found positive terminal misplaced so "re-adjusted" it. Funny enough my FF just did exactly the same thing. Lighter works, sat nav worked but USB type plug that you now get wouldn't as has ridge to prevent "over insertion"  2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

I have had the same issue for the past 3 years, and have now given up, the lighter works as it should, it has had around 7 different phone chargers in it, and not one has worked Yep they all work in the rear one 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater )))
