I stood a a city T junction intersection once and blocked the traffic on the green light to let traffic out from the side road where there was an ambulance a long way down a one way street with both lanes choked with traffic. I just did it, no one complained, and the ambos gave me a thumb up as they got out and on their way. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

I am always bemused by the people who smash up kerbs in blind panic when a siren approaches. They are the same people that need thirty seconds recovery time after the siren has passed while I am having a "stressed Eric" vein shouting "Its gone...... MOVE" |

Unfortunately common sense is in short supply i.e. Several Box junctions and traffic lights now have automatic cameras, you'd be done ! |

A computer might send out a standard letter if they didn't pick up on the Emergency service snapped at the same time - I would reply with an explanation and probably Dash cam footage |

There is no defence I'm afraid. It's a simple "you ran the light" and the system doesn't allow you to do so to help an emergency vehicle.
If you were able to find the actual emergency crew that you helped and if they would testify that you'd saved lives then you might get some leeway but even then I doubt it. The courts won't care. The problem with getting points for running a red light is that insurance companies don't like it at all. The odd speeding fine isn't an issue these days but running red lights sets off the "dangerous driver, high risk" alarms. Premiums can be hit accordingly. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

There's a difference between pulling over to let them through and running a red light. And the reason running red lights is considered dangerous is because sometimes people die when it happens. Enforcing that does not make someone a jobsworth - ask the emergency services how much fun it is to go to a RTC where someone is seriously hurt or killed. Some of these RTCs are at red lights when people have ignored the red.

I think there is some confusion - I have never driven along a bus lane, across traffic at a junction or traffic lights - as I said safely is the main concern - but I have moved over and stopped on a bus lane especially when cars in front do to clear the way and a cars length across a stop line or more if other traffic stop and are waiting for emergency services to cross but they are trapped. If that breaks the law so be it |
