Zebra crossings

Picture the scenario; you come up to the edge of the pavement at a zebra crossing. Cars stop to let you cross the road, you cross and wave at the drivers!

Why does everyone wave? Is it just to say "Thanks for obeying the Highway Code and stopping instead of mowing me down?"

And if you are the driver instead of the pedestrian and the pedestrian doesn't wave, do you mutter "Miserable git!"?

you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing, ergo, you don't have to if they are standing waiting to cross......

I wouldn't take that leap of faith anyway, always wait until someone stops, and wave in acknowledgment!
