Replacing existing door tread plates

Hi all,

I've just bought some LR OEM replacement door sill tread plates. Now my RRS had this full 8 piece set originally spec'd when new in 2006, but they're scratched to hell by previous owner. Has anyone replaced existing tread plates? I don't want to damage the plastic surrounds by ham fistedly prying them off with a screw driver, so was just look for advice if possible. Looking at it the outer sill ones might come off relatively easily, but the inner ones I'm worried about.

Has anyone done this before?

Hi Peachy,

Here is a shot of the tread plates I've bought, and one of what my car currently has on it.

As you have stated the outer plate should come off easy but the warmer the better - if needed use a hair dryer on the plate this helps agitate the adhesive. Finger power should be enough - take your time. When I replaced mine I replaced the whole trim plastic which came with the inner plates inserted already. Do the named - inner plates have clips or adhesive - I'm sure they are clipped - There are 2 ways - either remove the whole trim which is easy enough or just the sill plate ( I've never done it that way ). By removing the whole trim you can get a better grip on the plates both taking off & replacing.
To remove the whole trim pull the plastic up with force but slowly - again you should only need your fingers. There are spring clips underneath - make sure you don't loose them - you will need to pull the lower B Post pillar trim away to manoeuvre the whole piece out this is made easier by moving the seats all the way forward then all the way back Thumbs Up It's easily taken out. You may want to clean the carpet then - mine was filthy Rolling with laughter I even found some cash Whistle
Replacement is the opposite of removal it's sounds long winded but in my opinion worth the effort.

Hope this helps Thumbs Up 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

Thanks so much for taking the time to write all that out - much appreciated mate.

Do you think I should buy replacement plastic trims instead? Start from scratch so to speak. It could be they're cheap as a plain plastic part?

Did you manage to get the inner plates out of the plastic ok?
I'm looking at doing the same thing on mine the rears are fine but the fronts are worn.
Any tips on getting them off without removing the plastic section

I took the plastic sills off, but the attached stainless steel part wouldnt budge. So I've bought replacement bog standard plastic trim from LR (£21 per side) and will attach the new stainless steel covers to them instead.
