weights on rear

I have just found 2 big weights either side off rear exhausts. What are they for and can they be removed

Are they some sort of counter weights due to the large engine up front? 2006 RRS SC Bonatti Grey (the 55th car/van I have owned)

They're harmonic mass dampers. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Wales 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange

I've had mine removed. Some say they are there for a good reason, but vibration/sound dampening seams a bit of a silly idea, especially since mine were rubbing on the HST rear bumper ! Not noticed a single difference, except I don't hear the knocking noise anymore !  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

You want to see the size of the ones on the Fullfat, size of a bloody building block. If your gettin 5 mpg more, I'm bound to get more than that Rolling with laughter
Looks a bit of a "Friday night in the pub" design to me, it's described on parts list as sound suppressant yet referred to as vibration damper in other parts diagrams Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

IIRC, the rear of the body needs to be lifted, as they are one piece and go over each chassis rail

I'am surprised you have had the weights removed with no problems , Rover I would think would have researched the gains for having them fitted 2012 RRS. Orkney Grey

Spain

on a discovery 4 MY10, they have a nut that separate them in two, so, bumper off, loose the nut on the weights, loose the screw of the silent block, be careful with your feet (is a very heavy piece of iron!!) and you are done.

no need to raise the body. nut is in the upper.

I know because I had to change one with a bad silentblock that was knocking on corners
