Sold the V10 Touareg at the end of last year. Currently have a X5 but you never know what's round the corner. Wink

Claus , some more ideas for you. Well you did ask Shocked Surprised Laughing

If you're in the Perth area (T In the Park is close), then agree with what PaulB said about the A9 including following it to Wick and John O'Groats at Latheron rather than heading for Thurso (the Latheron -> Thurso route is rather really dull). Then take the A836 across the top of Scotland following the A838, A894, A837 to Ullapool. Then take the A835 to rejoin the A9 at the Tore rounabout. Head through Inverness and pick up the A82 which will take you down the west side of Loch Ness then keep on the A82 all the way to Balloch taking in Loch Lochy, Loch Linnhe, Glencoe and the west side of Loch Lomond (this is an utterly superb drive on a good day).

When you get to Balloch you can make your way back to Perth via the Trossachs something like this: A811 to pick up A81 through Aberfoyle, then onto the A84 through Strathyre onto the A85 to pick up the A827 along Loch Tay. The drive to the Ben Lawyers visitor centre is worth experiencing. At the end of Lock Tay you can re-join the A9 directly or take a scenic route on the A826 through Milton and Amulree to pick up the A85 again at Gilmerton which will take you back to Perth.

You'd need to allow two days to do the above comfortably. You could do it in a day but you'd need to leave really early and you'd get back very, very late

If you fancy something in the south of Scotland, then try this: From Edinburgh take the A701 south to Moffat. When you get to Moffat take the A708 along the Moffat Water valley to the Grey Mare's Tail and St Mary's Loch. At Cappercleuch (about half-way along St Mary's Loch), take the unclassified road that runs over the hills past Talla resevoir -- this re-joins the A701 at Tweedsmuir and follow it back to Moffat. Then take the M74 to Lockerbie. In Lockerbie take the B7068 to Langholm to pick up the A7 heading back to Edinburgh.

You can do this drive easily in a day. (On the northern outskirts of Langholm you'll see a single-track road signposted to Newcastleton. This runs over the hills and is well worth exploring -- a good road to find a nice spot for a picnic lunch but don't bother if you need to buy lunch somewhere Razz Laughing

Agree with ST by the way -- if you make it as far south as Carlisle turn back immediately Wink Wink Laughing Laughing Bill

Thanks guys. Keep it coming.

We're taking the ferry to Newcastle, and then going straight to Scotland.

We're looking for scenic roads.

Claus, if you are used to the scenery of Norway, much of Scottish West Coast will look quite familar (but "feel" different due to the midgies and cheap beer Laughing ). If you are looking for something to contrast with home, can I make the following suggestions.

Firstly, linger a while in Newcastle. It truely is a vibrant city and well worth a day and a night looking around the historic heart of the town and the amazing Quayside area with its art galleries, music centre and spectacular bridges plus amazing night life Cool . If you want somewhere to stay, you are welcome use our flat in town which is unused at present. Just PM me if you want.

Secondly, drive slowley up the Northumberland coast, visiting a few Castles (Warkworth, Alnwick, Dunstanborough, Bamburgh and Holy Island), linger on a few beautiful sandy beaches (Sugar Sands, Duridge Bay) and take in Alnwick Gardens.

Thirdly, drive North accross the border then through the heart of Edinburgh and visit Leith Docks area, before setting off over the Firth of Forth Bridge.

Fourthy, drive up the A9 and travel through Crief, then over "the hill road" to Loch Tay, follow the road on the South Side of the loch and have lunch at a fine hotel 5 miles before Killin.

Head West over Rannoch Moor and through Glen Coe, into Fort William, and take the Mallaig Road stopping at beaches at Arisaig.

Take ferry from Mallaig to Isle of Skye and visit the Cuillin Mountains (walking around the headland from Glen Brittle if the weaher is fine).

Return to mainland on the Skye Bridge then drive over to Glen Elg (great hotel and historic Broch with spectacular views back to Skye).

I could go on, but suggest from there Northwards you cannot really go wrong .....

Enjoy. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini
