all these watches get me scrabbling to have a look at them, some are out of my league, then someone made a comment yesterday that i could look for a watch, made in the same year i was born, but i though that was too old, so started looking for watches made in 2005 when my son was born, as eventually it will become his

My last (and only) watch had a flip up plastic cover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on it so I don't really know much about watches - but saw one a few weeks ago and decided to treat myself for my birthday as I really liked it

I'm going to stick my neck out on the line here and ask the question - what is the deal with watches?

Why are some £150 and others £50'000? Is it to do with the materials..accuracy..build quality..brands?

I read someones post earlier in the thread saying 'Having a watch simply to tell the time is like having a push bike instead of a RRS' which I thought was excellent but I still didn't understand it - in regard to watches.

We know cars have the same function, and I understand why some cars are £10000 and others are £1M - but how does this apply to watches?

Would love to know your guys input as there are obviously some very nice bits and big watch fans here  LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

Sag, as with everything in all fairness....you pay a premium for everything from quality of manufacture, complexity of the movement, materials etc. Hence even a basic watch can vary hugely in value by simply having rose gold instead of a steel case.

But with many of the "original" masters, Audemars, Vacheron, Jaeger, Patek it is the complexity of the movements (moonphase, tourbillon etc) that adds serious value and even more so with "ultra thin" models, where you are packaging all that hand made design into a tiny case only a few mm thick.
But aside from the "classic" watch houses as above, you add into the various "designer" elements into the equation where you get over engineered Richard Mille's starting at over £150,000 and blinged out Jacob & Co going for £1m.

Personally, although they are jewellery and perform the same basic function as a Casio....I view the higher end ones I have purchased as pieces of art / collectables to be passed on to future generations!

But that's just my 2 pence!  Now

Can you imagine the complexity of some mechanical watches (perpetual calendars) which can display the year, month, date as well as time, moon phase as well as other complications. Coping with the different month lengths and leap years without needing reset. All within a wrist watch and operated through cogs and springs. Graham

It's all relative I guess. If the fat bird from the chippy put a huge smile on my face and made me want to rush home after work everyday whereas the leggy blonde made me want to slit my wrists, there's really no question to answer. However I think I see the point you're trying to make in that post.

Thanks Graham & Richamartin - enjoyed reading what watch enthusiasts like and a bit more info on the subject. I've been looking at different types of watches over the weekend and trying to understand what all then different things mean (automatic etc)...seems like it could be an addictive (and expensive!) hobby.
