One of the causes of front diff failure has been the breather hose filter clogging up and not allowing the pressure within the diff to escape. This in turn causes a build up of pressure and forces oil out of the seals. This does not affect rear diff or the transmission breather hoses.

Land Rover have released an updated part, however they have not made it standard procedure to swap out. Everyone should change this part if they do not have the new style vent.

Locate the breather hose. The original one is thin and faces straight up.

Another great 'how to' well done. LR Dealer did the filter change on my car but the diff had already failed! 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Do we know where the transmission and rear diff breather vents are located? Do these also fail in the way that the front diff breather does? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

RRSTDV8 - Not sure on the locations of the other two, however this appears to only be a problem with the front diff vent as the foam inside melts from the heat of the engine. Want to do a DIY job on your car? Check out the definitive 'how to' thread in the technical section

Gearbox and transfer box breathers run along the top of the gearbox, and exit around the vacuum pump area.
The rear diff breather travels up with the fuel filler pipes behind the wheelarch liner.

None of these have any valves or filters on them

Replaced the breather valve today. The pipe on mine appears to be a little shorter than yours so my new valve is just touching the adjacent pipes. Not ideal but, as the original valve was U/S it can't be any worse than it was. Hopefully all will be well. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Did mine today and also changed the front diff oil. Grateful thanks for the write up! I did a few miles then snipped off the old breather - immediate puff as pressure released - proving it was duff. I spotted the problem a few months earlier as when changing the engine oil I noticed one half shaft seal was slightly leaking. Would not have seen this without taking the lower main cover off.

Again following instructions on the site I found the filler hole and undid it and then drained the oil out.
The magnetic drain plug had done it's job and there were a few filing there! But the main reason for writing this is that the oil that came out was like creamy drinking chocolate! I suspect this may be the first change at 106K miles.
Incidentally I had no problem using the normal contaier and squirting in 600ml.

If that is the case I think I had better change the rear diff oil as well!
