Black rear quarter light trim fell off on motorway

I was travelling on the motorway in the RRS (MY11) when a loud flapping noise started - hitting the metal car body.

I pulled over and the black piece of trim that fills in the gap between the rear quarter light window which then wraps around to the rear tailgate opening had detached at the front where it meets the glass and was flapping away. The trim will push back in place against the side quarter light glass and all the plastic clips on the trim appear to be intact - although woefully inadequate. However I cannot get the trim to clip back with sufficient strength that the leading edge cannot be easily lifted by the airflow around the car causing it to detach again. Does anybody know how it is supposed to stay in place? The other side is very firmly held against the glass. I can find no broken clips on the detached trim panel - so I guess I just don't know how it is supposed to be fitted??

Luckily I had some duck tape and have stuck it down to the glass so the airflow cannot lift the leading edge for now.

I won't even start on the fact the trim is starting to fall off a 39 month old car! - I will just add it to the long list of pathetic build quality issues I have had with the RRS.

Any ideas very welcome - can the panel be replaced?

Would it be possible to semi permanently fix the panel using some automotive grade adhesive such as stixall?. is there a need for the panel to be removable?.

Just a thought. Need....more.....mud, must.....off.....road.

Not sure what I could glue it to - it seems to clip to the rear of the glass panel with felt spacers holding it off the metal bodywork behind. Anyway, a picture...

just did an image search for Range Rover Sport rear trim panel clips, have a look and see if any of them look like your clips. Perhaps they are worn if they keep coming adrift at speed, I have had a similar thing happen with an engine under tray and the only solution was new clips.

With regards to fixing with adhesive, it seems that permanent fixing would not be advisable as it may hinder future replacement of glass as it clips over the edge. Need....more.....mud, must.....off.....road.

Seems as though you need something like this.....

Just google search automotive adhesive pads or something similar, seems the adhesive has gone dry. Need....more.....mud, must.....off.....road.

Yes - very, very helpful - thank you very much.

I have all the clips on the front edge the panel is just not stiff enough and bends allowing the clips along the front edge to disengage. I guess the plastic moulding has deformed when it was flapping around on the motorway - or was defective in the first place which is why it blew off. Guess I need a new panel - any ideas?

Alternatively I will see how much the local dealership will sting me for one.

I'm not sure if the trim for the later sports is the same as the early ones, but a quick google of range rover sport d pillar trim returns some results if you click on images.

There seem to be some on ebay, perhaps you could take a look and see if any seem the same. If one of the experts wants to weigh in with some knowledge then that would be helpful.

One I found, but they are black ( painted ).

I stand corrected ( By myself ), they will paint them any colour you want.

Actually, a quick search of the site and it seems they only list a mobile number.......probably best to steer clear.

Try a main dealer and you never know, they may only want the one kidney. Need....more.....mud, must.....off.....road.

Okay - I have just removed the studs and whole trim and one of the four front tabs (lower middle) that locates under the glass was bent back on itself. I guess this was done when it was built - instead of locating the clips under the glass panel the idiot building it just gave it a hard knock, bending one of the tabs that wasn't aligned properly.

I have managed to straighten the tab (not sure how - it isn't metal but would plastically deform to be straight again) and re-installed the panel. It is now much, much tighter against the glass (the tabs have ridges that tighten the panel to the glass as you push it on). Hopefully it is now much harder for the airflow to get under the panel and push it off. We will see.....

I was only doing 70 at the time but was driving into a gale along the A55 so the peak windspeed over the car would have been 100+ which must have found gap and forced the panel off. Luckily I pulled over before it destroyed itself flapping on the car.

kklone - thank you very much for your help. The D pillar video, in particular, was invaluable to see how it is supposed to be installed.

No problem, you're very welcome.

Perhaps some adhesive pads would be a wise move as they seem to be an expensive item, surprise surprise....

Seems they had adhesive pads from the factory, probably not good to leave it all up to plastic clips.

All the best. Need....more.....mud, must.....off.....road.

Wales 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange

you may find that this will still come away some time in the future. This happened to mine. The 'lug' or clip which is integral to the moulding becomes weaker once bent initially, and then just gets weaker and weaker. Then the other lugs start to bend. The only solution I found was to replace the whole thing with a new one, and luckily I got a new one on ebay for £25 delivered.  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !
