The EHB has been known to come with issues, yes you can use park only, but you have a handbrake so i would use it.

In MY13 cars at least, the Electronic Parking Brake can be configured in the CCF file to engage automatically when the key is taken out of the car IIRC. A suitable diagnostic tool is required to change this setting. May be your car has been set to this hence the dealer saying it comes on automatically. EPB on all models releases automatically when driving off.

Yes, rolling an inch or two is OK. My driveway is also steep and I was having the exact same discussion with someone about the sequence today. I select park, release the footbrake, car rolls a bit, then apply EPB. The guy I was talking to suggested selecting neutral, applying EPB, releasing footbrake, letting the car roll and then selecting park. Apparently the difference is whether the impact of rolling forwards/backwards is absorbed by the parking brake or the gearbox? No idea whether gearbox is even involved in this or if all this is even relevant now with modern cars being intelligent |

The hand brake (EPB) should always be used and while it will release by itself when you drive off this should not be used.

Be aware that it is an offence in ACT to leave the park brake unused in a car. see page 221 of this document - http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/ni/2013-...13-329.pdf Section 213 (2) Draconian I know, but there you go. |

I don't agree with this statement, I would use my EPB and wear that out before using the park position to hold the car as replacing the epb is far cheaper than a new gearbox.. Also I use my epb all the time, never had a problem, its when you don't use it when problems start if and when you do use it, as things start to seize up and this starts the chain reaction that leads to epb problems.. To stop the strain on the park position with the auto box and to make it easier to engage drive without the "clunk" always stop, keeping foot on the brake, then apply EPB. Then release foot from brake and let the car settle, only then move into park position. |

The Park setting moves a piece of metal in to engagement with a toothed ring on the output shaft of the gearbox. By engaging park and then letting the weight of the vehicle roll until the gearbox takes the load you're putting a lot of strain in to the gearbox. The EPB is a brake. It's designed to absorb braking forces. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

I use the EPB all the time and I drive off through it too. Mine used to be noisy in use but isn't now. It used to be jerky in application but isn't now. I'm not convinced that not using the EPB is good for it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

The Park position is quite crude as shown below. If applied on a steep gradient without the parking brake first taking the strain, it can jam under the car weight, the only solution is having the car pushed or pulled very slightly to release.

I am not sure how putting it is park wears the gearbox out. 07MY RRS TDV6 Arctic Frost Aspen Interior |

Thanks RRSTDV8. Will change my habit. Good thing is even though I do more miles, Mrs. drives it more frequently and she already follows the correct procedure. At least she said so when asked. |
