How heavy should a 2007 sport tailgate be?

We bought our sport from a dealer and took it back to them because the tailgate is very heavy.

My Mrs has to use both hands to lift it initially and get it up to quarter open then push with both arms all the way too the top. That seems excessive to me. I would assume that once the tailgate is open a little the hydraulic arms should assist lifting and it should fully open by itself. The dealer is saying they've found nothing wrong and that's just how they are. Are they fobbing me off?

Do they have another sport there?
Try that one. It shouldn't be difficult/heavy to lift, quite the opposite, the arms should take the strain.

Seems like they are fobbing you off tbh Wink ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

'Fobbing off' - probably.

Ask to see another RRS and try that as a comparison.

On none of the RRSs or FFRRs I've had has the tailgate been 'heavy'.

You could then say that you'll order/buy two replacement stays and if that cures the problem they can pay and you'll keep them - if not, just return them.

Mine is very easy to open - just press the button on key or tailgate Whistle

Seriously though my last RRS had a very heavy boot - SWMBO could not lift it so always used the glass section instead - I just assumed that was normal Confused

After a few years the struts did seem to lose their oomph and did need a push the last bit or I banged my head Rolling Eyes

Good idea to try another and see if easier Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Yep, mine is very heavy, I assumed it was normal as well although I did wonder at one point whether it was supposed to have a motor drive on it.

What is actually wrong then? 2006 Supercharged

Thanks guys!

I tried a tailgate today and although it was heavy, mine is much heavier! So I plan to bitch continuously until they agree to change the struts to make it lighter. Haha

External temperature also alters the ease of which the manual tailgates can be opened...on a cold day they require a bit of a shove to move upwards and downwards.

I had an issue with my rams which usually meant I banged my head on tail gate as it wouldn't open fully unless pushed the last few inches. At no point was it ever heavy, once released it opened without any input from me. Once rams were replaced, it opened fully with gentle tug and no input from me and closed with a little pressure.
Do you have an additional spoiler fitted by chance? 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

I suppose my description of "heavy" might of been inaccurate.
I have just the factory fitted rr lip spoiler.
The head banging issue seems exactly what I'm experiencing. Hopefully new rams will cure the headaches lol

IIRC my first sport had one arm under warranty - you may not need both Thumbs Up Less of an issue if dealer paying or in warranty....
