[Wanted] Wanted buy or borrow - Snow chains

Driving to the French Alps this weekend and want to make sure I 'comply' to the French. Hoping not to use them but don't have winter tyres. Does anyone have any chains I could 'hire' or borrow with a deposit, or sell? Or I buy socks for £60? My tyres are Pirelli 275/40R20
I'm in Farnham Surrey...and I'm a girl - this needs to be easy!!!

Chains won't fit on 275s...

...well, they will fit but they catch on the suspension!!!

Socks are probably your best route or a hasty purchase of a set of winter tyres.

Snow Socks are not legal replacement for chains in most of Europe I found.

You can fit the chains to the 20" wheels - but they are expensive.

Rudd make the LR ones, try them. Mike

This is nightmare! So it looks like the only option is the thule K-Summit at £250 or the Rud at £400 odd? Hire ones are the normal chainy looking things tht won't fit mine.

It doesn't look like socks will pass, but it is sods law if I go without there will've been a huge snow dump on Saturday morning and the cops will be stopping everyone to check. And if I spend £400 you can guarantee the roads will be clear (as they always have been in the past for me)

You sound just like me - finally bought winter tyres this winter after driving LR's since 2000 without them and not a flake Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have the spike spiders I got for my a Frrelander 2, haven't tried them on the RRS yet so don't know if they fit but you are welcome to borrow them. Only problem is, I'm North Essex.

I cant recall how much the rudd (they do a few as well, give them a call) are - but they are expensive, but half the price of the LR version.

Make sure you check clearances - many don't fit with 20s you need the type that bolt on the side and hook over the edge.

I think all the chain versions don't fit on the 20's and its tight in there.

We had this grief about 14 months ago and decided £275 (the price we could get them for) was just too much for this, so booked somewhere else in Europe.

Have you got M+S tyres as well - this is also a minimum requirement. Mike

Sorry, but just went out to check and unfortunately the RRS wheel nuts are larger than the FL2 and so the nut clamps don't fit.

Thanks for looking Andi!

Look what I found on the AutoSock website!!!

"Q12 Are AutoSock approved for use in the Alps, where "snow chains" are compulsory?

AutoSock have been approved since 2010 for use in France as an alternative to metal snow chains where the B26 snow chain signs require snow chains to be carried. Visitors to France will need to download a sticker to fix to the AutoSock storage bag, and are also advised to download the relevant details, taken from the Gendarmerie website, and AutoSock's press release.

AutoSock can also legally be used when snowchains must be carried or fitted in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovenia."

And there's some on fleabay for £32 (RRP £69) woohoo
Very Happy Thumbs Up

I would double check that - but we were looking at Switzerland and somewhere else (cant recall) in 2013 and they were not legal...so double check, you don't want a fine (or actually have to use them to save your bacon) Mike
